RAFW: Cloud Nine for Friedrich Gray

The mood was dark and mysterious, electronic tech-house music blasting through the speakers. The Friedrich Gray show opened with strobe lights flashing chaotically, and as the first model approached the catwalk entrance, she emerged through an amazing mirrored portal of multi-faceted reflections, resembling that of futuristic cave.

Ben Pollitt’s edgy, unique take on fashion provided the perfect collaboration for the Cloud Nine brand, with both sharing similar qualities of innovation and style.

Leading the hair direction was Cloud Nine ambassador Jon Pulitano of Headcase Hair, who created a sleek, strong and contemporary style in line with the aesthetic of the Friedrich Gray brand.

“The hair for Friedrich Gray was strong, sleek and shiny with a vinyl like finish. Inspired by the moodiness and architectural finishes of Ben’s collection, hair was smoothed into a strong, sharp style featuring a clean, square-like hairline juxtaposed with a natural textured ponytail,” said John.

“I prepared the hair with the Cloud Nine iron to smooth and create shine from roots to the nape area. Once tied into the ponytail, I finished the style by smoothing hair with the Cloud Nine on 75 degrees – this ensured the natural body was not removed, leaving a shiny finish to the style.”

Titled ‘Refraction’ Friedrich Gray’s SS 10/11 collection provided audiences with a psycho-sexual experience featuring garments that reflected an aggressive and compelling energy.

Adhering to the minimalistic design aesthetic of the brand, the collection features a contrast of texture and colour, featuring distort traditional garment lines, sheer panels fused with washed leathers and tonal shading of black and white.

Get the look:

1. Starting with clean, dry hair, create a clean, wide side part.

2. Starting at the nape, take small sections of hair and with the Cloud Nine iron and smooth hair from roots, stopping at the nape area. Continue this all the way through the hair

3. Using a gel and again starting at the nape area, take horizontal sections and apply the gel using your fingers and comb from roots, stopping when you reach the nape hairline. The rest of the section below the nape area should remain product free. Continue applying the gel in sections, directing hair towards the centre of the nape. As you approach the front section, ensure the hairline is gelled into a square-like shape.

4. Once gelled, tie hair at the nape using an elastic.

5. Using a Mason Pearson and blow dryer, brush ponytail, following brush down the ponytail with the dryer to create a natural, smooth texture. Using the Cloud Nine iron on 75 degrees, smooth over ponytail to create a brilliant shine without removing the natural body of the hair.

6. Finish by spraying style with a light hold hair spray, followed by a shine spray/serum for added shine.
