During Hair Expo Australia 2010, nervous apprentices took the floor in the Hair Expo Look ‘n’ Learn Theatre to create a fashion forward look in 35 minutes. The finished look had to be complemented by make up and styling, with at least three centimeters taken off and the design line of the hair cut changed.

Apprentice Cutting Competition winner Joanna McGlashan
As the cutting commenced it was obvious that the biggest trend was a Sassoon-inspired tear drop wedge – a technical haircut using a wide range of skills – scissor over comb, clipper work and precision graduation were all demonstrated for the execution of the look. An array of creative color work was immediately noticeable with copper and violet combinations an obvious trend.
Skillful color application gave a seamless blend between contrasting colors and was a testament to the young talent on stage. Much of the color work featured hidden color panels that became exposed as the hair hit the floor. The use of these techniques strengthened the geometric outline of most hair cuts that were on stage.
Strong perimeters that gave structure to the look were teamed with softer more texturised interiors. The fringes on the models remained at eye length, some sweeping into a peak, others curving the cheekbone.
Curly hair was seen just once on the competition floor, with tumbling curls and an androgynous side slick being an audience favourite.
Judges awarded points on technical vision and hair fashion with the total look of the model also considered. Trends in hair were aptly tied in with clothing trends. When the model’s capes came off a huge array of shoulder padded garments stormed the stage.
Apprentice cutting competition winner Joanna McGlashan, from Vogue Eco Friendly Hairdressing, displayed technical styling techniques to create a strong elevated fringe with a tapered hairline and occipital disconnection.
The colour was paired perfectly with the haircut as rich violet roots merged into bright copper ends. Joanna received Yuki CD 10 layer laminated Damascus Blades valued at $695 as well as a complete kit of the revolutionary Moroccanoil styling range. She accepted her coveted trophy at the Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards on Monday June 14, 2010.
