Wella Trend Vision Award Winners 2010

New and emerging creative hairstylists from all across the Australia joined in Sydney yesterday to re-create their looks beneath the watchful eye of Wella Trend Vision’s judging panel – Hamish Galianos from People Hairdressing, Renya Xydis from Valonz, Phillip Gallo from Gallo Hair, Nadine Johns from Rockstar, Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher from Culture magazine and Hair Expo New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year, Mana Dave from Blaze.

The technical and creative skill behind each contestants' look was put to the test before the final results were revealed before an audience of near 180 industry and media heads – a supreme showcase indicating a rise in the competition’s creative benchmark.

“There was a very high standard this year. I also judged last year and thought that this year was miles ahead in terms of its level of competition and the number of entries. The hair fashion element was also much more present in this year’s competition and the interpretations of the trends were a lot more thought out and a lot stronger generally. We are very happy with the winners and felt that there was a very clear difference between which competitors stood out and which didn’t,” said Hamish.

Gold Award winners in the Color category, Marie Uva and Assistant Joey Scandizzo (far right) Rokk Ebony, South Yarra, VIC

Marie Uva and Joey Scandizzo from Rokk Ebony, South Yarra VIC, will fly the Australian flag at this year’s international finals in Paris as gold bearers of the Color category – the creative couple’s third time lucky on the national Wella Trend Vision stage, let’s hope the age-old wives tale results in success abroad in 2010.

Electing Techno Poetry to parade their talents, Marie and trusty assistant, Joey moved away from harsh lines and embraced soft femininity aboard a beautiful blonde base that played canvas to cool, pastel colours and impressive tapering techniques.

Gold Award winners in the Young Talent Category, Mariam Enegd and Assistant Patricia Sousa, Biba, Fitzroy, VIC

Alongside them will be Mariam Enegd and Patricia Sousa from Biba salon, Fitzroy Vic as winners of the gold award in the Young Talent category thanks to a European-inspired Nomad Couture manifestation.

“We were inspired by European high fashion catwalks, mainly from Autumn Winter 09 where Dior and Galliano were our favourite icons. The shows were all about lots of bold colours and the hair styles were amazing so we just really wanted to produce a look that would pay homage to something we love so much. We still can’t believe that we are going to Paris – it still hasn’t sunk in yet! There was such a high calibre of entries this year and every one of the finalists deserved to go to Paris,” they said.

Silver Award winners in the Young Talent Category, Jessica Lean and Assistant Paige Maw, The Last Tangle, Albury, NSW

Jessica Lean and Paige Maw from The Last Tangle in Albury, NSW earned the silver award in the Young Talent category with a blushed-baby-blue rendition of Techno Poetry while Maria Van de Ven and Monica van Wyk from Bounce Hair and Image in Noosaville, QLD won silver for the Color category with an elongated carnival version of Techno Poetry.

Jessica and Paige stepped into the spotlight again as winners of the People’s Choice award – a global nod of recognition calculated from 16,000 votes gathered from the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

“I drew inspiration from the carnival where there are so many quirky characters and colours. I wanted to capture the vision of when you look into the fairy floss machine, with lots of pinks, purples and blues – I really wanted to bring those colours to life so my style was made up of dusty violet and pinks with a clean, soft blonde base,” said Maria.

Bronze Award winners in the Color Category, Samantha Dalakian and Assistant Stephen Seago, Roar Hairdressing, South Yarra, VIC

The Color category’s bronze award was awarded to Samantha Dalkian and Stephen Seago from Roar Hairdressing, South Yarra VIC for a UK bred style flushing black with violet and blue in a salute to Midnight Stage. Young Talent bronze winners, Daniella Barca and Kalia Mollica combined a structured silhouette with earthy-notes of softness in a dramatic display of Nomad Couture.

Marie Uva, Joey Scandizzo, Mariam Enegd and Patricia Sousa will be flying to Paris to compete against over 80 teams from 50 other countries at the International Finals on 6th November with the dream of being recognised as the Wella Professionals International Trend Vision Award 2010 winner.

These two teams will also be one of the first to get a preview of 2011 trends and given the opportunity to launch them to hairdressing community in Australia in February 2011. The prize pool also includes a fully funded editorial photo shoot, with Renya Xydis as a mentor, to be featured in Culture Yearbook and one year of free Wella education.
