Even the salon’s dog, Alfie, donned a pink Easydry eco towel and the basin area was alive with pink paraphernalia as several McGrath Breast Care nurses and staff from the McGrath Foundation received the makeover of a lifetime to kick off the pinkme! campaign.

Hairdressing heavyweights including L’Orèal Professionnel, Shortcuts Salon and Spa software and marketing company, Boutique Marketing as well as Essential Therapy,  INSTYLE magazine and styleicons.com.au have all got behind the campaign to help raise money for the McGrath Foundation with Easydry donating $25 for every box of pink eco-towels purchased by a salon.

pinkme! organisers are hoping to raise $50,000 to help fund the rapid expansion of McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia with more than 100 salons jumping on-board for the campaign.

“What’s great about this campaign is that it doesn’t matter what brand or type of salon you have everyone can get involved. As an industry we are predominantly talking to women so it’s great that through pinkeme! women can unite,” said Jo Burgess of Shortcuts.

The McGrath Foundation had just four breast care nurses when they first set-out to change a woman’s experience with breast cancer and are now rapidly heading towards 60 across Australia. A nurse must practice for at least 5 years to be a McGrath breast care nurse and are often stretched across a large area in their region.

“In 14 months since I’ve been a breast care nurse I have worked with 270 women and their families so this is a huge challenge for us. I like to spend as much time as possible with women affected by breast cancer and when I have four women to see in one morning it can be a real challenge. To have an afternoon of pampering like this is such a luxury,” said Jenny Treloar

Regular Wild Life clients were relishing in the opportunity to donate to the McGrath Foundation while enjoying the surrounds and the opportunity to speak with the nurses while staff wore touches of pink which added to the uplifting feeling of the unique initiative and contributed to the overwhelming feeling of everyone working towards a common goal.

“We were so excited when we were first contacted about this campaign. Not only do nurses play such a huge role in a family’s life in a very similar way to the role of hairdresser’s but there is a similar level of intimacy in a salon with a hairdresser,” said McGrath Executive Director, Tracey Bevan.

“It’s great for us to have this opportunity to show what it means to be involved as a breast care nurse. Our mission is not only to have more nurses but also allow them to spend more time with patients through all stages of their experience,” Tracey said.

Nurses Elain Arnold, Jenny Treloar and Catrina Ross enjoyed an afternoon of signature Wild Life refreshments as well as hair and beauty services including facials and manicures.

“I’m a big advocate for ‘Be nice to you’ time and not only does this bring some much-needed time-out for women who are used to caring for others but it also gives salons the confidence to better understand and talk about women affected by breast cancer in the salon.

“So many salons have had great ideas and new ways of encouraging donations in the salon and we look forward to maintaining the evolution of this campaign next year,” Tracey said.
