Pivot Point's Ruth Browne receives education award

Nominated alongside 60 candidates from across Australia, Pivot Point's Ruth Browne was honoured to receive the Minister of Education’s Award for Excellence. Nominees for this award came from all different trade backgrounds, and Ruth's win is a both a personal honour and a nod to the hairdressing industry for its ongoing dedication to providing valuable training workplace opportunities for apprentices.

As a former hairdressing apprentice herself, Ruth Browne credits her background as an apprentice in laying the foundations for her achievements in both business and educational arenas.

Among these achievements is a place in the Hairdressing Hall of Fame in Chicago, Illinois, as well as longstanding places on the international judging panel for both International Hairstylist’s Society and International Worldskills competitions.

Throughout her career, dedications to the promotion of vocational education and training have been constant. She has tirelessly campaigned and lobbied for improving outcomes for young hairdressers through improved education and workplace conditions, pay and opportunities for Apprentice hairdressers.

Of her ongoing support for apprentices Ruth has said, “We must keep promoting vocational education and training as an equal first choice. Often career teachers, and even I, thought it was a second choice to do a trade—but for me this has been an amazing journey to continue learning and developing my trade.”

Ruth continues to manage hairdressing academies in both Sydney and Melbourne, and describes herself as a “hands-on manager.” With the academy’s students, she promotes the importance of continuous improvement, motivation, and self esteem.

In receiving the Minister’s Award, Ruth described her feeling as “absolutely humbled...Apprenticeships and hairdressing have been my life – I think it’s amazing.”
