RAFW: Goldwell for Marnie Skillings

Hair legend Shane Henning created contrasting textures of undercuts mixed with curls to achieve an eclectic layering look for the vintage-tinged aesthetic underscoring Marnie’s Strange Love Spring Summer 2011/12 collection.

A dynamic vibe to a soundtrack of Santigold, Foxy Brown and Nick Cave preluded a collection of things thrown together in true Marnie style. Skillings collaborated with internationally renowned stylists Dave Bonney and Michelle Jank to create a jumble of alluring yet contrasting aesthetics.
The result was fuss-free and fun, with chunky bangles, sheer socks paired with heels, and unexpected colour combinations. Prints remain Skillings’s forte, with subtle animal print set against dainty florals.

Models walked the runway with strong brows accentuating clean, nude faces by Napoleon Perdis which drew attention to the hair.

“Just like Marnie's Spring/Summer collection that was heavily layered I wanted to recreate that same feel with the hair,” said Shane.“Using Goldwell's StyleSign Blue Lagoom Gel we slicked part of the hair from the nape of the neck to mid section of the hair and tied it to the side in a tight knot. For the top section of the hair we used Goldwell StyleSign Power whip to give hair texture,” he said.

Shane and his team then used heat styling on the hair with curling irons before pinning the curls back to set. The hair was then brushed out and then backcombed with fingers to give the hair a textured look. The overall look was a short and edgy messy bob style with the illusion of an under cut.
To complete the overall aesthetic Marnie demonstrated why her accessories are so highly coveted with each look complemented by tooled leather pumps and jewellery made from Xenophora shells that she personally collected and hand-dipped in gold and silver.

Setting the tone for the season, Strange Love focuses on beautiful silhouettes and textures that can be all-at-once coy and frivolous laced with a distinct undertone of dark sexiness and who better than to created an equally lived-in look than hair director Shane Henning.
