RAFW: Fudge for Saint Augustine Academy
[Thu 12/05/2011 01:24:44]
Fudge Hair Directors Lores Giglio and Luana Coscia channelled a roughed-up 60s bohemian look for the Saint Augustine Academy ‘Love and Haight’ collection – injecting some much needed laid-back and lived-in style to fashion week.

Pushing the boundaries of androgyny, Love and Haight draws inspiration from Thom Wolfe’s seminal book – Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, published in 1968. Wolfe’s opus is widely considered to be the most defining tome of Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco – a place that is widely recognised as the epicentre of the hippie movement.
“I really wanted to explore the originality of the way these people dressed at the time, without making a collection of dress up costumes. The trick was finding a balance between referencing the late 60s and giving it a modern interpretation, without losing the focus on what inspires my designs in the first place,” said Saint Augustine Academy designer, Alvin Manalo.

Throughout the collection, Manalo has successfully combined the aggressive/hard-edge style of bikies with the ethereal, mystic and organic layering of the hippies. The Rolling Stones late-60s style is also visited, along with a cast of the women around them, like Marianne Faithful and Bianca Jagger. High-waisted denim flares, cuffed chinos and triple pleat pant dubbed the ‘beachcomber’ complemented classic slim-fitting shirting and leather fringing while the colour palette harnessed neutral tones such as khaki, tan, ochre, ivory and blush.

“We’ve gone for a roughed-up 60s look – think biker meets Bohemian and we’re working with the grungy, hard-feel of the collection,” said Fudge Hair Director, Lores. “It’s an organic look, undone and effortless to represent the wearability of the collection,” she said.
Asymmetrical braiding was the centrepiece of the hippie vibe while lust-have long, beautiful hair with soft, relaxed shapes and textured extensions made for a very unique look on both the male and female models.

“The guys are showing lots of texture, pulled back off the face. We’re making the most of salt spray to get lots of body and texture,” Lores said.
Fudge Root Juice was used on the girls to create roughed up volume and on both the guys and girls Pump Up and Dry Shampoo added the perfect bohemian finish.

Get the braid:
1. Take small sections and prep dry hair with Fudge Root Juice and Fudge Salt Spray to add lots of texture with fewer product on the top sections.
2. Once hair is completely wet with the product the hair needs to be blow-dried, only using hands and a paddle brush lightly scrunching at times.
3. Create a section at the front of the head, along the hairline, with a side part. All on the same side.
4. Along the hairline, loosely braid the hair to the ear, continuing into a plait that will be pinned into the look once finished.
5. When the braids are complete, loosen the braid and finish the style with Fudge Skyscraper.
