A finalist in this year’s Hair Expo Best New Salon Design Category, togninis proves they have the design know-how to refashion a business after 23 successful years.
Established in 1987 by Benni and Tracey Tognini, togninis developed an outstanding reputation as Brisbane’s go-to salon previously taking out the title of Best New Salon in 1998 when their Elizabeth Street salon first opened.
Growing rapidly as the new creative hub of Brisbane, Fortitude Valley saw an exciting fashion and lifestyle scene emerging perfect for a Tognini transition.
“It is extremely exciting,” says Tracey Tognini, “it has been a giant effort but a rewarding one. Our clients have been fantastic over the last 23 years coming to us. But the city dynamic has really changed and we found many of our clients were only coming into the city to have their hair cut and styled. By moving out to the valley we are providing our clients more access with parking, shopping, and really providing more of a lifestyle choice.”
Officially relocating to James Street in October 2010, togninis would connect to the precinct with outstanding results making great use of a ground floor location with plenty of parking. Surrounded by other high profile occupiers and increased foot traffic togninis naturally lends itself to being an experience based salon atmosphere, “It’s alive and yet personal, everyone can see what is happening in the salon” says Benni Tognini.
Despite downsizing to a large open plan layout of 280 square metres, the 28 cutting chairs have been reduced to 10 with a colour area that now holds six to eight people - the team have been forced to be much more resourceful in their use of space.
“All the processes have been integrated and streamlined, we’re more efficient and more transparent,” says Benni. “There is no hiding and stashing things in the back room, everyone has to be on their toes and this creates great energy amongst the team.”
Embracing the available natural light, thanks to more than 17 metres of glass frontage, there is a wonderful sense of lightness emphasised further by floor to ceiling mirrors and the use of stone, floss white and black surfaces. The oversized mirrors create the illusion of more space whilst the passing parade adds a sense of activity and movement – it’s energy with serenity.
“We needed the salon to be cleverly designed for the space, providing both comfort and workability,” says Benni. “Fashion changes, often quickly, but we also needed it to resonate with personality.”
The move from the city has been a positive transition for togninis who have retained, regained and also captured new clientele within a short space of time and made the most of a new lightness of space and attitude.
