Say hello to blog Stuff That I Bought

Armed with a stylish shopping addiction, Styleicons spends five minutes with blogger Elise Phillips of Stuff That I Bought.

Elise of Stuff That I Bought

What is your blog called? How did you come up with the name?
My blog is called ‘Stuff That I Bought’ and the name came about because of my serious shopping problem. Friends were always asking me for advice on what to buy, be it beauty products, salons, restaurants, whatever, so I started the blog and thought the irreverent name would match the tongue in cheek tone.

When did you start blogging?
I started blogging on Stuff That I Bought almost four years ago, but before that I had various blogs on livejournal - I have always been a tortured performer who craves an audience.

What is your blog about, why did you choose to blog about that topic?
It’s about all the lovely and frivolous things I have bought recently - I love trying beauty products: makeup, skin care, hair care and nail polish. Actually, I love nail polish so much that I started a second blog solely devoted to finger paint called The Nail File. It’s also about restaurants, bakeries, bars (I like food, ok!), accessories, stationary and whatever else catches my eye.
There is nothing better than the rush from finding a cool new product and being able to tell your friends about it - my blog is just that feeling multiplied by a hundred. If you find something awesome, why keep it to yourself?

Do you blog full-time or part time?
I recently left my career in media research and strategy to focus on blogging part time and start consulting to brands on using social media. Having been in this social space for a number of years now, having a background in consumer insights and strategy, and having my blogs, I have a really solid understanding of what brands can be doing to connect with their customers.

What is the best thing about blogging?
Being “in the know” - getting to go to launches, speak to experts and have access to products before they hit shelves. Before I was blogging I would buy magazines every month and scour the pages to find what was coming - now I have been granted access to that world and I'm the one sharing that insider information and educating my readers.

What have you been involved in recently?
I was a panellist at a PR industry night, where I spoke to over 130 Sydney fashion and beauty PR people about dealing with bloggers and how we can work together. I was also recently nominated for a Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Female award in the blogging category, and featured in the pages of Dolly magazine.

Any last words?
Blogging has really afforded me some amazing opportunities and the chance to meet some brilliant people, but at the end of the day, without the products and the events and community, I would still be blogging because I love what I do. Whether I have one hundred, one thousand or just a single reader, I blog because I love the sound of my own voice.
