The Virgin Australia Group One Show delivered some of Australia’s best design talent as new season collections from Scanlan &Theodore, Akira, Aurelio Costarella, Lisa Brown and Easton Pearson were sent down the catwalk.

Craig Smith’s inspiration for the ‘look’ reflected the earthy aesthetic held by these designers.
“The hair direction for the first group show has a really organic feel where texture is key,” said Smith. “The hair is feminine without being ‘too pretty’ and has a grainy appearance.”
“Within the collections being shown there are some really beautiful long dresses and this is complimented by adding a little bit of height to hair through a slight conical shape in the crown area.”

Get the Look
1. Depending on the existing texture in the models hair, the first step is to really ensure a strong foundation is created, by prepping the hair with Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Grip Mousse. The mousse is worked through the hair in sections, from the root area through the mid lengths to the ends. Avoid overloading/saturating the hair with product.
2. Tip the head forward and blow-dry the hair using your fingertips to add volume to the root area.
3. If there is some natural curl/movement in the hair, you can now move onto step 4, if not loosely tong the hair from the mid crown area, working in fairly large sections. Once tonged, gently brush through the curl.

4. To create a little height, gently backcomb the top section, working from the hairline to the back of the crown. This creates a small conical shaped height, and adds an interesting dimension to the final shape.
5. Smooth the backcombed area by using a Mason Pearson brush to take the first section of backcombed hair over as a veil over the volume enhanced crown area.
6. Now start to loosely French braid the hair from 1/3 down the back of the head (just about where your final backcombing section finishes). Don’t get too busy with taking equal sized sections; the aim is actually to be quite disproportionate. Tuck the end of the braid back under itself, ensuring any bobby pins used to secure the hair are out of sight.

7. Now it’s time to ‘mess it up’. Use your fingertips to loosen up the style gently pulling the braid away from the head. Take your time with this, as here lies the difference between ‘been dragged through a bush hair’ v ‘a sexy distressed braid.’ Ensure the end of the braid is ‘fattened’ by really working to pull the braided sections apart.
8. Once the braid has been loosened, delicately pull out tiny wispy sections throughout the hair. Avoid symmetry and work through any areas that appear sleek in any way.
9. Finish with a spritz of Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Elastic Hair Spray.
