MSFW: Kevin Murphy for Designer Series Show 4
[Tue 13/09/2011 02:09:18]
Much like the material season at hand, it was a riot of culture across hair design at the closing MSFW show – Designer Series 4 borrowing from the old, new and ... pink.

Accompanying the designs of Above, Alistair Trung, Alpha60, Arnsdorf, Carly Hunter, Emily Ward, From Britten Product Laboratory, Kuwaii, Limedrop, s!X and Trimapee, Kevin Murphy elected a severe clash of cultural elements to close the string of 2011 Designer Series shows.
“This style was influenced by the 1960s beehive bouffant and a wispy 1970s granny look combined with an African influence,” explained Kevin.

The technique was in the brush and sewing kit this show around – each used like a styling product in a quintessential Murphy twist and showcase to the public just hours earlier at a complimentary styling session headed up by Murphy’s main muse; James Furness.

“We’re using back brushing like a styling product. After applying Hair Resort, back brush and dry for a straight but frizzy result – and this is what will give us the ‘baloony’ shape we’re after tonight,” said Kevin of the perfectly rounded marshmallow textured shape that was the foundation of the Designer Series 4 show.

And then out came the sewing kit to steadfast the African twist. Not a needle and thread from nanna’s place, the carefully designed Kevin Murphy Sewing Kit: Nécessaire á couture. A fancy kit for, in this case, a very fancy ‘fly swatter.’
“You know those long wispy sticks used to get rid of flies?” asked Kevin very sincerely.

“Well, we’re replicating those through sewing a pony at the back. We want the ponies to look like long whips. The look is a bit 1970s and a bit African. We’re taking influences and hopefully doing it the right way,” said Kevin.
And the Colour Bug continued to work its magic at Designer Series 4 with a less vibrant more pastel “veil of colour” in purple and pink for contemporary interest.

Get the look
1. Start by prepping the hair with the new KEVIN.MURPHY HAIR.RESORT.SPRAY.
2. Dry into the hair and then tease the roots with a SMOOTHIN.BRUSH to create texture.
3. Set the tease with a hair dryer, tease a little more and pull the hair back into a low slung pony tail, creating a round bell-shaped beehive on the crown.
4. Taking needle and thread sew around and down the ponytail to achieve a stiff and rigid African influenced look.
