Colour QUEen

An exclusive salon experience by Monique McMahon, QUE Colour  is an intimate and edgy colour studio in the heart of creative hub Darlinghurst - writes Ashleigh Sharman.

With 20 years experience, from salon to editorial shoots to celebrity clients, Monique has honed her skills on a global scale: training in Paris at the Jacque Dessange International School, Vidal Sasson in London and working as head colourist with Valonz Sydney. Finally, the time was right to go alone.

“I’ve always had an interest in colour and have backed that up with heaps of training,” explains Monique. “I think Sydney is lacking in people who specialize in colour and really love that aspect of what they do so I wanted a place where I can do what I think is right for the client, not out of a book, not out of a training workshop and make the hair healthy and shiny, not tortured."

“You need to be dedicated to having great colour and I wanted a place where I could show my knowledge and skill," adds Monique.

Intimate yet space-efficient, QUE Colour is a nesting ground for those who, like Monique, share an obsession with colour. Exclusively stocking Parisienne hair care brand Christophe Robin, a range designed to prevent coloured hair fading, QUE Colour is not only at the forefront of colour care but colour trends and techniques.

“My trademark is Balayage as I trained in Paris for it and I brought that back to Sydney training a lot of hairdressers here too. It’s something I specialize in and that I love," says Monique. “I think balayage will be around for another decade, people love it – they love wearing it and they love how it works between salon visits. There will be slight variations of it, like we’re seeing now which is exciting, more solid formation in the balayage, more tonal differences, more of a finessed style balayage. It’s become softer and prettier moving away from the harshness of dark roots and light ends.”

Open four days a week, including two late nights, QUE colour provides a hair stylist on Wednesdays and Saturdays in addition to a manicurist every Wednesday.
