Ponytail Tricks with KMS California

Celebrating poolside chic in Perth, Barney Gleeson created a high-shine ponytail for the summer collection shoe launch at Carmen Steffens’ flagship store.

Brazilian shoe designer Carmen Steffens chose the crisp, white resort wear of local label Paper Skye to compliment her range of summer sandals and wedges with Barney Gleeson presenting a sleek, middle part ponytail for KMS California.

“The slick ponytail seems easy; but is one of the hardest styles to achieve,” explains Barney. “Its simplicity is deceiving, and it requires the right prep and a bit of patience.”

GET THE LOOK

Preparation:

1. Use KMS FREEESHAPE Styling Spray at the roots and FREEESHAPE Styling Creme through ends. Taking small sections, directional blow-dry the hair, ensuring that all the hair is moving in right direction for the end ponytail.

2. Using the FREEESHAPE Styling Spray again, iron through the hair for a perfect, glassy finish.

Sectioning:

1. Create a radial section, from ear to ear at the crown. This creates your back section. From the low recession on either side, create a section back to your radial parting. The remaining section through the top creates your fourth section.

Creating the ponytail:

1. Cut a length of hat elastic to 20cms to use in securing all sections.

2. Working on the back section; have the person lean back slightly and using long strokes through the hair begin to brush through from roots to ends.

3. Place the ponytail halfway between the crown and the obsipital bone and continue to brush through the hair until you have a clean, tight surface through the back. Spray with HAIRSTAY Medium Hold Hairspray as required to help hold. Firmly grip the hair in position. With the help of an assistant, using the hat elastic to tie the ponytail in place, ensuring really tight tension as you do. Leave the remaining hat elastic to drop.

4. Moving to the side panels; brush the hair back into the rear ponytail. Use the HAIRSTAY Medium hold hairspray as required. Once you have the side panel in place, secure with the hat elastic. Repeat with the other side.

5. Moving to the top section; repeat the same process and secure the final piece in place. Once the top section is firmly secure, trim the remaining hat elastic away.

The Finish:

1. Take a small section from the underneath of the ponytail and using hairspray, create a ribbon of hair. Wrap this around the ponytail to cover the elastic and secure ends with a bobby pin.

2. Working with the HAIRSTAY Maximum Hold Hairspray, spray over the hair.

3. As the final finish, grab a soft bristled face brush and spray HAIRSTAY Anti-Humidity Seal onto the brush. Dust the brush over the hair for shine. Spray through the length of the ponytail with the Anti-Humidity Seal to settle length and add shine.
