LFW: Moroccanoil for Paul Smith

The androgynous but feminine feel to Paul Smith’s AW’12 collection was complemented by soft and natural hair thanks to Paul Gray for Moroccanoil in London.

“We were looking for a shape that was masculine from the front, yet feminine in the back,” explains Gray. “We wanted to create tight sides that give an over-lapping softness. So, from the front you see a narrow shape and from the profile you see a big low-rounded convex shape that went into a low ponytail that tucked into the neck”.

“I loved the idea that it was bulbous but not in a 1960’s way, the volume wasn’t high up on the crown, it was much lower. I had to create a textured base to give hair ‘guts’ while also offering that soft fluffy look. We wanted to create a grungy but sexy, messy look making sure that the hair didn’t look as though it was freshly washed”, commented Gray.

Get the Look

1. Hair was brushed out thoroughly and sectioned to allow easy access to the roots.
2. Throughout the different sections, Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray was sprayed right at the roots. Using fingers, the hair was messed at the roots and blow-dried until dry, to set the ‘messed up’ textured look. This method was repeated throughout the whole of the hair.
3. For the over-lapping look, hair was sectioned an inch above each ear, sprayed with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray from root to tip and combed through using a fine comb.
4. Hair was then lifted, (leaving a small section at the base of the neck) and secured at the top of the head to allow the two sections to be pulled tightly. The pieces were secured at the nape of the neck and tied with an elastic band.
5. Once the two pieces were secured, the rest of the hair (to the crown of the head) was sectioned and backcombed throughout to make way for the bulbous look.

6. After hair was backcombed, Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream was smoothed throughout the hair to help protect hair during styling and to also keep the curl in place.
7. A ½” curling iron was used, starting at the crown random sections of hair were curled to create soft natural looking waves.
8. A Moroccanoil Paddle Brush was lightly brushed over the top layer to create a clean side part.
9. All hair was secured at the nape of the neck and secured using an elastic band – with the bulbous shape being kept well defined.
10. A small piece of hair was sectioned from the ponytail and sprayed with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, then carefully wrapped around the elastic band and secured in place to conceal the band.
11. Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray was sprayed directly on to fingers and the ponytail was pulled messily to create more texture.
12. Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream was smoothed throughout the ponytail to keep the curls in place and random sections of hair were curled using the tong, to give a natural messy wave.

13. The curl was then loosened by running fingers through the hair.
14. Using the tong, the hair was curled around the face and pushed back towards the ears - to place away from the face.
15. To finish the look, hair was sprayed with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to hold the style in place.
