Travelling to the slums of Bangkok from 28th December to 13th January, Elizabeth Sweet volunteered to cut the hair of children in the Baan Nokkamin Foundation Home; caring for orphans, street kids, underprivileged children and children of drug addicts.

Organised by the Samphat Chiwiit Church, Elizabeth met with community leaders and was escorted through the slums handing out brochures in Thai and giving free haircuts and English classes.

“I was very privileged to cut the Muslim community leaders’ hair,” says Elizabeth. “She saw what we were doing, came over and thanked me for helping her people and asked for a haircut.”

A group of nine people from the Coffs Harbour Coastal took it upon themselves to teach English in the schools during the day and hold English classes at night in the Samphat Church in addition to giving free haircuts every night.
“Haircuts are a luxury in this area and not many can afford this,” adds Elizabeth. “I loved giving them concave bobs with choppy layers.”

With donated products from De Lorenzo (the Tricho Scalp Range of particular benefit with the scalp issues that volunteers were faced with) and local wholesalers Norris and Touchstone Salon Supplies providing clippers to Bangkok staff, passion and dedication was provided across all sectors of the industry.

“It was an amazing experience,” describes Elizabeth. “It was very confronting but very rewarding and a great way to spend my holidays knowing I can use my skills to bless other people.”
