Sydney and Melbourne continue to war about everything from sport to climate and who has the right to call itself the fashion capital of Australia. While Sydney has a leg up by hosting Merecdes Benz Fashion Week Australia annually, Australia’s shopping centre gets one back with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week later on each year. KEVIN.MURPHY (both the man and the brand) created a myriad of styles for the vast array of runway shows and large number of designers on display.
With no time to rest after their recent stint for Myer Spring 16, the team created hidden braids, natural waves, bound ponytails and more over the full-week fashion event. If you weren’t able to make it to every runway, we’ve provided a snapshot below – as well as a bonus get-the-look (you’re welcome)!
Modern and feminine were the go-to directions for the Opening Gala, held at Town Hall on August 30th, complementing a group of looks by designers such as Aurelio Costarella, Bianca Spender, Carla Zampatti, CRISTAHKEA, Gwendolynne, Jasongrech, OneDay, Rachel Gilbert and Thurley.
Kevin Murphy and his team of Session.Stylists utilised the brand’s ANTI.GRAVITY.SPRAY, SESSION.SPRAY and SHIMMER.SHINE to create a sculpted plait.
Premier ready-to-wear fashion was complemented by ‘strategic waves’ and individualised texture in the super natural look. Paired with outfits from designers including Akira, alice McCALL, Cose Ipanema, Kate Sylvester, Megan Park, Nevenka, Romance Was Born and Yeojin Bae, the hair team used a large tong to create loose, wearable waves. STAVYING.ALIVE and DOO.OVER were instrumental in priming and finishing the look.
There was an oriental atmosphere for the Contemporary Designer showcase, with hair binding the technique of choice to suit designs by ALPHA60, bul, Daniel Avakian, Kuwaii, LIFEwithBIRD, Livia Arena, Manning Cartell and NEO DIA. HAIR.RESPORT SPRAY was used to prime the hair, before it was secured in a tight ponytail at the nape of the neck and wrapped entirely in black ribbon.
Subtle braiding stole the show at the Spring Carnival runway, with designers such as Aquila, Asilio, C/MEO COLLECTIVE, Calibre, Dom Bagnato, Keepsake The Label, Martin Grant at Christine, Misha Collection, Nicola Finetti and Philip Treacy at Christine presented to the enthralled audience. Closing the festival last Friday night, Kevin and his team created a festival-esque ponytail (requisite hidden braids included) to suit bright, summer-centric fashion styles. Leading labels such as CAMILLA, Camp Cove Swim, Etro at Christine, gorman, Lee Mathews, Obus, Stella Jean at Christine, Suboo and Swash at Christine presented their collections, while the hair team used HAIR.RESPORT.SPRAY and SHIMMER.SHINE to inject a dose of summer into the proceedings.
You win this one, Melbourne.

PRIME Blow dry in KEVIN.MURPHY ANTI.GRAVITY.SPRAY with a round brush creating a soft wave through mid-lengths and ends.
PREP Split hair in two, creating a half up half down shape. Secure the bottom section with an elastic low and tight to the nape. Gently back brush the top section creating a little volume. Gently brush the top section over the bottom section and create a centre part. Take a fine one-inch section from the bottom ponytail and plait.
FINISH Once the top layer is in place over the bottom pony, take the plait and secure with a pin on the opposite side, creating a band effect across the back of the nape. Finish with KEVIN.MURPHY SESSION.SPRAY.
