Discover this low-toxic sustainable hair and beauty salon in Sydney’s northern suburb of Manly. Bare Beauty House, led by Naomi Browner, has truly environmental-led practices that show the positive impact salons can have and how the industry can give back to the community.
“I’ve tried to think about the entire operations and how things can be done more sustainably,” Naomi said. “We use toxic free and low tox products that are not only better for our health but also stop nasty chemicals being washed into our waterways. We have a veggie patch in our garden and a worm farm, which we use to compost left over lunches, used loose leaf tea and ground coffee beans. Using loose leaf tea and ground coffee beans also ensures we don’t consume microplastics from the tea bags. My Husband Gareth has also built a street library, which is attached to the side of the building. The local community love it and leave not only books but DVDs and children’s toys.”
This approach is vital to staff, who love being able to give back and reduce their own ecological footprint, while the use of low tox products is also valuable for their health and wellbeing. The sustainable mindset similarly appeals to and attracts clients
“We have a lot of clients seeking us out due to our low tox and sustainable values,” Naomi shared. “People are a lot more aware of what goes on in their body so even if they haven’t specifically come to us for our low tox values they are grateful when we tell them about the products we use and it starts them thinking a little more about what they might be using at home. We love working with people who so strongly share our values.”
As this is such a core value for Bare Beauty House, Naomi has several essential and efficient tips and practices that salons can adopt to better their sustainability initiatives and do their part to elevate the environment, and it can start with some easy changes.
“The easiest swaps for any salon to make are to introduce a recycling program by using Sustainable Salons as their waste removal service,” Naomi said. “Swapping your coffee and tea for loose leaf tea and coffee beans is another great one, as well as reusable gloves. You can also introduce ECOHEADS at the basin to reduce the amount of water needed to cleanse hair. There’s actually so much any salon can do to make a difference.”
“Sustainability is a journey and making small positive steps can make a bigger impact than you think so just pick one thing that doesn’t overwhelm you and eventually you can keep adding more concepts to your business and life.”
