They say that change is as good as holiday, and somehow Hair Expo achieved both, packing its bags, stands and stages and heading to Melbourne for the very first time. The hairdressers responded by attending in droves, resulting in packed out education classes, dynamic evening events and a floor more frenetic than ever. Forgive us for never wanting to leave.
Hosted alongside to Comic Con at Melbourne’s Convention and Exhibition Centre (which meant, yes, we passed our fair share of super heroes in the hallway) from June 11-13, Hair Expo seemed instantly revitalised by its new locale.
On the floor, the Main Stage, Launch Pad Stage and all new ManStyleLab delivered inspired presentations every half an hour. International and local artists representing Schwarzkopf Professional, Ozdare, Goldwell, American Crew, Showpony and a host of other iconic brands, not to mention a bevy of talented Australian and New Zealand salons, kept seats filled throughout the weekend. Meanwhile Hair Expo’s award winning hairdressers styled bloggers and media personalities on stage throughout the final day. For shoppers, these big name brands, as well as Paul Mitchell, Wella Australia, Olaplex, RPR Haircare and dozens of others made it almost impossible to see every stand over just the long weekend, offering the latest technologies, trends and tips at their increasingly innovative expo set-ups. INSTYLE was there at stand 1324, unveiling our 30th anniversary surprise – a limited edition straightening iron, made in collaboration with GlamPalm. There will be more information on how to get your hands on these exclusive tools to come.
Across the aisle in the education rooms, the term ‘sold out’, became a reoccurring statement found on the agenda. Audiences packed the halls to watch international and local educators alike, enjoying a program that ranged from business forums to creative sessions and Look and Learns. Instagram star Guy Tang had audiences laughing with a profanity-riddled, rainbow hair-based class on his Olaplex World Tour, while Sharon Blain, Tracey Hughes, Lucie Doughty and Peter Gray made up the ultimate dream team for Global Morph. In business, Tabatha Coffey hosted intimate sessions while Julie Piantadosi delighted whole classrooms by mixing business with humour. Insights into small business, retail and salon management, as well as inspiration on cut, colour, styling, the latest trends and world-class techniques were in no short supply.
After the sessions wrapped up for the day and the floor closed its doors, attendees never had long to get ready for the premier nighttime events. This year these events included a Welcome Party, complete with presentations from last year’s Australian and New Zealand Hairdressers of the Year, Dmitri Papas and Michael Beel, and GenNext, sponsored by INSTYLE and home to shows from emerging hairdressing stars. GenNext 2016 was compered by none other than Tabatha Coffey and Joey Scandizzo and headlined by TONI&GUY’s Socialized collection, which ran the gamut from fashion to Avant Garde in one enthralling show. Haircare Australia, Keune, Matrix, Osmo, Schwarzkopf Professional and other brands made sure the hairdressing industry had free reign over Melbourne, hosting their own soirees all over the city and harnessing the celebratory nature of Expo.
The Schwarzkopf Professional Awards Night Gala was another highlight to finish the weekend. You can see the full list of winners here.
While nothing can replicate the invigorated mood, atmosphere and experience of actually being at Hair Expo, INSTYTLE and Styleicons will continue to bring you more updates and insights from the event, from our favourite education takeaways, Main Stage looks, party moments, social media finds and event highlights.
Stay tuned and – if we may be so bold – start counting down to next year!
