With typical creative flair, the 27th Show was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday October 18, 2009.
As inspiring as it is benevolent – the annual event raises money for Leukemia research – this year’s event began with a dedication to Guy Mascolo, one of the founders of Toni&Guy and TIGI haircare, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
A film about his life and illustrious career was played, after which his widow Flora, accompanied on stage by Anthony and Pat Mascolo, was presented with a special award designed by Dutch hairdressers Wielo and Ell Essers.
The theme for this year’s show was Kaleidescope, and the evening commenced as colourfully as it meant to go on with a performance of Colour My World, by the Sylvia Young School.
Alternative Hair founder welcomed the audience while Alternative Hair President and Honorary President, Anthony Mascolo and Joshua Galvin respectively echoed their thanks before presenting awards to each leader of the 17 teams who were appearing at the show.
The International Visionary Awards then ensued – each of the 12 finalists presenting one model, reflecting the photographic work that got them thus far. Alfie Booth from Andrew Collinge in the UK, took the International Visonary Award Crown.
The second part of the evening began with an appeal by Leukemia Research CEO Cathy Gilman who introduced an emotional film made in September 2009 when families affected by leukemia were taken to Dsineyland Paris for a special weekend, funded by Alternative Hair.
Then a magnificent presentation by some of British hair icons including Mark Hayes, Andrew Collinge, Clive Colman, Jason and India Miller, Richard Thompson, Angelo Seminara Tim Hartley, Daniel and Joshua Galvin, Tony Rizzo, Robert Lobetta and Anthony Mascolo had the audience awe-inspired.
And if creativity, inspiration, eye-popping styling and tear-inducing emotion weren’t enough, the evening culminated with Tony Mascolo revealing that the event had raised a whopping $175,000 for Leukemia research.
