Set in the majestic surrounds of Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building and hosted by TV presenter and journalist Sarah Wilson, beauty media professionals gathered in early November for the announcement of the 2009 beautydirectory Star Awards.

Selected from a mammoth pool of entries, six awards went to exceptional beauty journalists and five were presented to outstanding PR agencies. The winners in the beauty journalism categories were selected on tone, delivery, depth of information and consistency while the beauty PR winners were chosen based on key objectives, creativity, innovation and overall success.

The judging panel for the Star Journalism awards was comprised of Gavin Blackburn, Managing Director of Coty; Sandy Symons, Senior Lecturer in Journalism at UTS; Frank Kavanagh, Myer cosmetics buyer and Gary Davey, David Jones cosmetic buyer.

“There is little doubt that overall the entries were better than last year – not only in terms of the breadth of content but also the level of research that had gone into them…I read numerous articles that required a great deal of research and explanation yet the articles were generally fun, interesting, incisive, easy to read and comprehend,” said Frank Kavanagh.

The winners in the beauty PR categories were judged by Emily Taylor, Beauty Director of marie claire; Rachael Mannell, Beauty Editor of Cleo; Lucinda Pitt, Beauty Director of Grazia; Gwyneth Howell, Senior Lecturer in Public Relations at UWA and Lawrence Ang, Associate Professor in Marketing at Macquarie University.

“It all comes down to innovation. You don’t have to have a lot of money to be creative. To make a campaign outstanding you have to have a really strong link back to the product being launched,” said Emily Taylor.
