Matrix goes MAD

Melbourne was a melting pot of creative talent on April 17 – 19, as over 500 salon professionals from Australia and around the globe flooded into the city for Matrix Australia Destination – an action-packed three day education event held at The Sebel Albert Park Hotel.

Hairdressers from Australia and from as far away as India, Indonesia and China celebrated everything artistic and creative in hair; with the help of leading international hairdressing sensations Errol Douglas (UK), Nicholas French (USA) and Jo Jordan (UK) and Australia’s own Benni Tognini.

The event opened with the announcement of Matrix’s new slogan, Matrix: Imagine all you can be, which set the tone for the three days of awe-inspiring work to be seen ahead.

The hair shows, fashion parades and education seminars kicked off with a bang, at the Matrix Australia Design Team opening show, comprising of Sue Morgan, Stelios Papas, Peter Dorio and Andrea De Deugd who captivated the audience with an extensive range of luminous, bold colour work and modern cutting and styling techniques.

The next two days followed with education seminars and hair demonstrations presented by Errol Douglas, Nicholas French, Jo Jordan and Benni Tognini across all areas of hairdressing.

Each of the leading hairdressers offered their expert advice as the audience watched in amazement at their incredible hair creations- from mind blowing avant-garde hair sculptures, vibrant hair colours, catwalk ready trends, salon friendly cuts and haute couture styling.

On the Sunday night, The Sebel Albert Park Hotel’s main ballroom was transformed into a fairytale wonderland for the Matrix Global Design Team Gala show and dinner.

The theme for the night was a MAD Hatter’s Tea Party with Errol, Nicholas, Jo and Benni taking to the stage to do what they do best; avant-garde hair.

The exquisite hair styles created by each of the hairdressers were works of art in their own right. From gravity-defying up styles, fairy floss, kaleidoscopic hair colours, razor sharp cuts, extreme textures and bundles of elaborate hair extensions, the dynamism on stage kept the 500 strong audience at maximum excitement levels.

In keeping with the MAD Hatter’s Tea Party theme, the stage was just as elaborate with a seven metre long dinning table embellished with giant cup cakes, candelabras, tea pots and dainty cups and saucers, surrounded by lush green hedging.

The models strutted down the catwalk draped in couture garments by the likes of Alex Perry, Anaessia, Seven Souls, Cappellazzo, Glamadonna, Karen Willis Holmes and Sophie Kyron – the perfect attire to comp lement the extravagance of the hair designs.

The creativity continued on the Monday with the four leading hairdressers presenting new directions in high fashion styles, salon colour services and up and coming colour trends.

Three days, 85 models, seven education seminars, two Matrix Design Team shows, hundreds of hair wefts and 27 cans of Matrix Vavoom Shapemaker hairspray later, Matrix Australia Destination came to a close, making the event the largest industry educational event ever held by Matrix Australia.
