UTS Emerging Talent show

The recent winner and finalists of the ghd & Harper’s BAZAAR Session Stylist Awards were celebrated at an exclusive fashion event held in conjunction with the top fashion graduates of the UTS college, to showcase the talents of the up-and-coming stylists and fashion designers.

Held at UTS Fashion and Textile Design college on Monday February 15, the three award finalists including winner Chung-Yang Su (Yoshi) and runner-up Jason Chong Li (both from New Zealand) and Highly Commended recipient Ryan Mitchell of Sydney, were given an exciting a taste of what it is like to direct hair for a fashion show.

Each stylist was paired with a top fashion graduate and worked with their designer to create a hair look that reflected the collections.

Yoshi was partnered with designer graduate Olivia Young and created a glamorous do to compliment the collection of cocktail and party dresses.

“Inspired from the look I created as part of my submission, the hair had a glamorous 80’s feel, featuring big bouncy curls directed away from the face,” said Yoshi.

Next on the runway was designer graduate Danielle Van Camp, who worked with Ryan Mitchell whose, loose up-style went perfectly with the textured flowing fabrics of Danielle’s collection.

“Inspired by London and the shows of Chanel, I created a classic look that was textured and dusty, featuring a modern, rockabilly quaff,” he said.

Closing the show was hairstylist Jason Chong Li who partnered with graduate Alyssa Choat to create a ghd sea spray infused style that worked with the natural frizz of the model’s hair and fell into a loosely styled plait.

“Sea spray is my favorite product,” said Jason. “I wanted to create an editorial look that not only matched the feel of the collection, but was achievable to do at home.”

The ghd & Harper’s BAZAAR Session Stylist Awards was all about finding and nurturing up and coming hairstylists who displayed a passion and talent towards editorial hair, and on the catwalk, their styling didn’t disappoint.

Following the UTS Emerging Talent event, Yoshi went on to style a shoot for the beauty pages of the Harper’s BAZAAR April edition. He will later travel to New York or London to work backstage at a ghd sponsored show at Fashion Week.
