Dedicated to charity, industry and full-blown hair creativity, the Alternative Hair Show was back in London for its 35th year, this time presenting Utopia to a packed-out audience.
20 shows presenting takes on the Utopia theme in the most Avant Garde way imaginable were showcased on stage, with teams playing with colour, texture, shape and more in the diverse event. Teams from the UK, USA, Austria, Italy, Russia, France, Ireland, Japan and the Czech Republic each showed off their unique perspectives, in a visually stunning and incomparable hair extravaganza.
Primarily sponsored by Wella, and the setting for this year’s history-making International TrendVision Awards, the philanthropic show was also backed by Denman, Infringe, Linda Beauty, Parlux, Revlon, Sebastian and TIGI.
Developed with charity front of mind, the Alternative Hair Show was created in honour of Tony Rizzo’s son Valentino, in the hope of raising money for and spreading awareness of childhood Leukaemia and other blood cancers.
Alternative Hair Host, Linda Evans and Alternative Hair Trustee, Douglas Osborne, introduced this year’s charity appeal, asking patrons to donate money but also consider stem cell donation. The team welcomed miracle Leukaemia survivor Blue Tobin and his family to the stage to speak about the cause.
At the end of the night, the team was delighted to announce the amount raised by this year’s Alternative Hair Show – £280,626 (AU$472,238), an incredible effort on behalf of the organisers, donors and hair presenters.
Beyond these deep philanthropic roots, the event is also a celebration of hairdressing talent and artistry, and the evening led with this ethos in crowning the winners of the International Visionary Award. Presented by Anthony Mascolo, International President of Alternative Hair, together with Tony Rizzo, the duo presented winners and runners-up in categories of Cut and Colour, Men’s and Avant Garde. Congratulations to Lucian Busuioc, Chris O’Riordan and Jose Garcia Bentitez, respectively.
The evening also had time devoted to the AIPP international awards. Roberto Pissimiglia, President of the AIPP and Publisher of Estetica Network announced the Alternative Hair & AIPP Legends Award that was presented to Patrick Cameron by Robert Lobetta. Sanrizz, Mark Leeson, Candice McKay, Amparo Carrantala and Jason Hall also won AIPP awards.
The three hour show then commenced, with global artistic teams taking hair creativity to its absolute heights. The 20-segment show included performances from the UK Sebastian Creative Team, Hugh Campbell from Ireland, Cyrill Brune from France, Petra Mechurova from the Czech Republic, SACO from the UK, Austria’s Bundy Bundy, Charlie Price from the USA, Anne Veck from the UK, Italy’s Gogen, the UK TIGI Creative Team, Sassoon, the Kohsuke Visual Network from Japan, Fehringer from Austria, HOB from the UK, Robert Cromeans from the USA, Austria’s Klaus Peter Ochs, Alan Edwards from the UK, Russia’s Dmitry Vinokurov, Carlo Bay from Italy and the UK’s Sanrizz.
Packed with all the hair inspiration one could want, and based on giving back in a real and tangible way, the Alternative Hair Show once again left guests emotionally and creatively fulfilled. After 35 years, there’s still nothing quite like it.
