The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are known to be a little… rambunctious when it comes to red carpet fashion (also over-enthusiastic speeches, but that’s another thing entirely), so comparatively, this year was a little more demure.
Now, let’s be clear, when we say demure for the VMAs, we mean there was still highlighter hair, barely-there dresses and outfits constructed mostly entirely out of feathers (Beyoncé, we bow down), so it wasn’t exactly timid, as always there are noteworthy looks when it comes to hair, and beyond.
These are 6 hair looks from the VMAs you can use as major talking points in the salon tomorrow (and just for good measure, go find the clip of Kanye’s speech).
No awards show list is complete without Queen B, least of all an awards show that nominated Beyoncé an impressive eleven times (have you seen Lemonade? Eleven is not enough). You may have been distracted by Bey’s very sheer, feather adorned ice queen attire, but her hair was a very cool (pun intended) braided look in its own right. Seemingly just a sleek pulled back style from the front, the look was actually delineated by two side braids and came down into a plait at the back of the head.
2. Blue Ivy
It may be difficult (nay, impossible) to upstage Bey, but her date nearly pulled off the feat. Blue Ivy’s dual braids, fairytale dress and innate adorableness stole some of the spotlight off her mother, not to mention pretty much the entire red carpet.
3. Kim Kardashian
Talking about high-profile dates, while Blue was holding Beyoncé’s hand, Kim was there for Kanye, sitting front row, centre. Her wet look (paired with a sheer dress) showcased the place of beach hair even in more esteemed settings (would you call the VMAs esteemed?). Interestingly, Kim was rocking blonde locks on Snapchat just one day earlier. Wigs are fun.
Recording artist Cassie made highlighter hair a feature of the VMAs red carpet, trouncing all other hair competition with a vivid trend that your clients may actually want to emulate.
5. Farrah Abaraham
Teen Mom star (is star the correct term?) Farrah Abraham went full superhero, complete with body art, Wonder Woman costume and temporary green hair to match. Why she went this route, we can’t be sure. Is she saying something about girl power, or pledging her loyalty to DC over Marvel? Either way, it does show your clients just how much fun they can have with costuming, makeup and hair for their next fancy dress party.
6. Ariana Grande
This time, Ariana Grande’s trademark ponytail came with a surprise fringe (!) and three levels of ombré, clearly working its way from dark brunette at the roots to blonde at the ends. We love seeing the singer change it up, with trendy, wearable additions to her usual style.
