We’re all at different places with lockdown as a nation – Victorians have passed 200 days in lockdown, Sydney and now larger NSW are grappling with extended restrictions and the rest of the country is between snap lockdowns at various stages. For hairdressers stuck at home, it’s not just the client contact and staff camaraderie they’re missing, losing the ability to create and elevate beauty either in salon or on set is a tough one for our artistic community.
With that in mind we’re focusing on that creativity and how the hairdressing industry can find that inspirational spark, even in lockdown. See if any of these six tips will work for you.
Focus On Creative Projects
With a little more free time, you can find your creativity in artistic projects, or even in just creating things in general. We’re used to being in salon with a new top-tier look to show proudly on Instagram every few hours, in lockdown find that sense of pride by picking up the paint brush, throwing your creativity into writing or music or even creating a beautiful meal.
Create Mood Boards
Hopefully this time away has your editorial mind racing. With that in mind, start planning your next on set project, for whenever it’s possible. Find inspiration online or in your daily life to build strong concepts, create a detailed mood board and make your next editorial session the best one yet.
Spend Time On Education
Hopefully salon teams are all investing in education in this time, as it’s easy to get complacent. Branded sessions, individual classes or just education created specifically for the team can spark that inspiration, even when it’s through a screen.
Find Inspiration On Social Media
Speaking of screens, social media is where creative artistry lives these days, from collections, to campaigns, education, on set or runway looks from the archives or around the world and videos and tutorials that make it all more tangible than ever. Start scrolling!
Practice On A Mannequin Head
It’s time to get a good old fashioned mannequin head out of storage or from an online store to go back to basics, learn knew things and practice. Pair this practical work with online classes and social media sessions to keep your technique in form and even improving.
Find Inspiration In The Small Things
When you’re so limited in space and activity, it can be hard to find any creative inspiration around you. In award winning and nominated collections from this season’s hairdressing awards, facets of lockdown life like the beauty in nature, a back to basics focus on what’s important and even every daily inspiration like colour and music all played a part in what motivated created ideas.
Remember inspiration is all around you and pull out the paintbrushes or even just your phone to find it as we all make it through this next phase of lockdown.
