We’re not quite sure how and when this happened, but in the blink of an eye we’re on the precipice of Hair Expo weekend.
With the event being just four days away (!) we know you’re probably starting to make your own agenda (or at least adding to it), so we’re providing you with our very own checklist to ensure you maximise the event.
Here’s our Hair Expo bucket list – how do your plans stack up?
1. If you’re looking to… be educated
It’s not all parties and frivolity at Hair Expo (although that is a lot of it, as you’ll rapidly discover in the ‘parties’ section below), some people are actually there to learn.
And who can blame them? This year sessions with international and local hairdressing legends make up the agenda. For example, Sassoon International Creative Director, Mark Hayes and his right hand man and UK Colour Director, Edward Darley will host an intimate session, while Instagram sensation Guy Tang (1.3 million followers is an impressive feat) will hit Hair Expo on his Olaplex tour. Lesly Jennison will also present on behalf of Schwarzkopf Professional, unveiling the brand’s always highly anticipated Essential Looks collection and editorial favourite Peter Gray will conduct education sessions on behalf of Moroccanoil.
The local attractions span from a collaborative show with Aussie superstars Lauren McCowan and Jules Tognini, and a panel presentation with previous Hair Expo winners, compered by Gary Latham. Also, Frank Apostolopoulos will lead a troop of Wella artists (such as Renya Xydis, Brad Lepper and Marie Uva) in their own program and education maestros Tracey Hughes and Sharon Blain will once again collaborate on Morph, this year with more global ambassadors on board.
The scary thing is this is just the tip of the education iceberg. Organise your tickets ASAP!
2. If you’re looking to… party
Ok, we told you the weekend was largely about parties, and we weren’t lying. Start with the official welcome party on the Saturday Night, which will shift the event to Melbourne in celebratory fashion. Also, big name brands such as Haircare Australia, Keune, La Biosthetique and OSMO will be hosting soirees throughout the weekend. Pick your poison and let your hair down (after you’ve spent the day learning how to perfectly put it up).
3. If you’re looking to… focus on business
It’s not just hairdressing skill and craft that will garner attention at Hair Expo, business acumen will similarly reign supreme at a handful of important seminars. Primarily, this year’s Top Salon Summit, with a 2016 theme of ‘You are the New Currency: The Power of Influence’, will gather a group of industry leaders to discuss how to subtly and powerfully harness your influential skills.
Other education sessions, such as hands-on workshops with Julia Piantadosi, will put business at the forefront.
4. If you’re looking to… master the expo floor
There’s so much to see on the floor this year, you’ll need to maximise your time to head to every stall. Well over 100 exhibitors, including major haircare companies, Australian brands, beauty businesses, education enterprises, software products and industry stalwarts, have turned up in droves, so much so that we can’t possibly mention them all here (although we do encourage you to preview them here).
Also, come say hi to INSTYLE and Styleicons at stand 1324. Freebies, subscriptions and a 30th anniversary surprise should be enough to warrant a hello, so we’ll see you there!
5. If you’re looking to… be inspired
There’s just one word – GenNext. The GenNext Gala will be a highlight of the Sunday night – headlined by TONI&GUY and hosted by Joey Scandizzo and Tabatha Coffey, it promises the best creative inspiration our emerging artists have to offer. Find out more about this dynamic event here.
Otherwise, around the floor, an array of presentations on the Main Stage and Launch Pad Stage should keep the inspiration constant over the three day event. Big name presenters such as Caterina Di Biase mean it’s always worth stopping by.
6. If you’re looking to… see Melbourne
The expo’s move to Melbourne provides the ideal opportunity to explore the city, so maybe take a day on either side of the event or, you know, just never sleep. INSTYLE’s recommended hot spots include Magic Mountain Saloon for the perfect cocktail, State of Grace for a Speakeasy vibe and Supernormal for dinner with a side of karaoke. Our shopping go-to’s range from personal styling haven Green With Envy, or dapper men and womenwear’s shop Asssin, but these establishments are just some of what’s to offer when it comes to the shopping, coffee and nightlife capital of Australia. Go explore!
7. If you’re looking to… turn your focus to men’s
The haircare industry’s favourite rising market will have its time at Hair Expo too, with men’s set to be a big focus on the floor and in the classroom. The all new Manstylelab will be something of a men’s hub, congregating leading men’s hairdressers on stage to share their talent and insights from the world’s best barbershops.
In education, the Topshelf barber team will talk fades and creative men’s hairdressing in separate sessions, while seminars focused on the latest tools will allow attendees to hone their craft. On the floor, stalls like American Crew, BaByliss PRO and more will host their own speakers and offer cutting edge men’s products and tools.
8. If you’re looking to… get fancy
Suit up on the event’s final night for the Hair Expo Awards Gala. Hosted by Richard Reid, the room will be filled with over 1000 hairdressers, all in their best dressed. The Essential Looks Collection presentation, a ‘theatrical dining experience’ and the all-important awards hand-out makes this the Oscars of hair. Find out about all the new feature here.
Check off this list and we promise you’ll have no Hair Expo regrets. Challenge accepted?
Hair Expo will take place from June 11 to 13 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
