Australia Wins Gold at Goldwell Global Zoom 2016

3000 stylists descended on Stockholm over the weekend for Goldwell’s Global Color Zoom event, but it was two Australian stylists who emerged victorious among only a handful of other successful international finalists.

The Global Color Zoom event housed 94 national finalists from 37 different countries, all who competed live at the event for the chance of winning international gold. The finalists created their interpretation of the brand’s D!SRUPT aesthetic live on stage, cheered on by an audience of thousands.


Three Australian hairdressers, Alexandra Kontos, Larissa Bresnehan and Christina Fuglsang, represented the country as national winners in categories of Partner Colorist, Creative Colorist and New Talent Colorist, respectively. The hairdressers all hail from Nischler salon in Tasmania, and came to the event with a history of success, with Alex representing Australia at last year’s event and Larissa winning Global bronze for the creative category in 2014.

This year, the success was magnified when Larissa won gold in the creative category, alongside Sargis Airapetian from Russia who won gold for New Talent, and the USA’s Daniel Rubin who was awarded gold for Partner colorist. Meanwhile, Alexandra was awarded bronze in the Partner category. These winners were announced at the exceptional gala dinner, held at the Ericsson Globe and followed by an after party.


The two-day event did more than just host the global competition, also putting on a spectacular artistic and business-orientated show for all delegates, visitors and national winners. Other sessions included the welcome event, where Kao Salon Global President Cory Couts presented upcoming launches for Goldwell and KMS, as well as the world premiere of the 2017 Color Zoom collection, titled IN-FLUX. The collection is characterised by the interplay of colours, and the merging of colour and shape that seemingly has no beginning or end.


Prior to the gala, the KMS Global Style Council headlined the Artist Sessions, presenting a campaign that fused high style and street style through a global lens. Australian session stylist Garreth Lenagh was joined by an international team, consisting of Simon Miller, Sam Burnett , Lori Panarello , Robert Mrosek, Kenny Chow , as well as special guest Edwin Johnston, in presenting these looks.

The final day prioritised business and creativity in equal measure, with Cory back to discuss modern issues plaguing today’s salon owners, with help from Sharon Nightingale from Lustre The Colour Studio, Queensland. Then, the Master Design’s Team presented fashion-centric designs from Goldwell’s signature programs. In this session, Global Haircutting Ambassador Jay Mahmood was supported by the best talents from the Master Colorist Program, Master Stylist Program and the new Master Texture Program, including Luke Reynolds from Luke Reynolds Hairdressing in Queensland.


Next, last year’s Color Zoom winners and the current Color Zoom creative team gave greater insight into the IN-FLUX collection, with Corinne Brown, Harley LoBasso and Natalie Cara Jones, along with Goldwell Color Zoom Masters Rodica Hristu and Sascha Haseloff sharing the technical details of the innovative collection. Last, world-renowned European stylist Mario Krankl presented an avant-garde hair show, before the attendees gathered at a farewell party in the heart of Stockholm’s bustling city.
