If you want to be and remain at the cutting edge of the hairdressing industry, education is key. Learning from the best in the business is the how-to and the HOB Academy in London is the where-to, write Lucie Clark.
Launched in 2007, the HOB London Academy was established by leading UK hairdressing group, HOB Salons, as a place for some of the UK’s best creative and educational talent to teach and inspire. This applied to not only the HOB salon teams but also hair stylists from around the world, keen to bring the Best of British to their clients and home town salons.
The HOB Salons group was launched in 1983 and is one of the UK’s hairdressing success stories, currently operating 24 salons in the UK with over 600 staff. Excellence in hairdressing via education is a driving reason behind the success of this group, and through the HOB Academy this wisdom is imparted to HOB salon staff and other attendees.
So, who’s running the show? The HOB Creative Team are the all-star educators behind the HOB Academy. The crew reads like an awards ceremony winners list. As a team, accolades include the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards Artistic Team of the Year 2008, 2009, and 2011, plus the UK’s Most Wanted Show Team 2009.
The HOB Creative Team is led by Hairdresser’s Journal 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2013 British Hairdresser of the Year, Akin Konizi. Akin is a leading light in the hairdressing industry and International Creative Director of the HOB Salon group. Also on the team is 2009 London Hairdresser of the Year and 2014 Nominee, Darren Bain, Senior Technical Educator, Issie Churcher, Educator, Ian Rotman, as well as 2011 International Trend Vision, People’s Choice Winner and current BHA Newcomer of the Year Nominee, Jake Unger.
The HOB Creative Team are highly sought after for high profile fashion shows, photo shoots, television, session work, and by celebrities (Akin has worked with Ellie Gouding and Dido to name but a couple), but on a day-to-day basis they bring their passion, knowledge and expertise to the HOB Academy. Attendees at the HOB Academy are fortunate to have access to these big industry names, who personally teach the classes, which are kept small to maximise staff/student interaction.
The HOB Academy is located where the cool kids congregate in London’s fashion forward Camden. There are two state-of-the-art teaching studios, with courses offered over either one, two, or four days catering to different levels of experience and the needs of working in or running a salon business. The wide variety of courses include; classic cutting, men’s cutting, salon creative, advanced creative, salon fashion colour, advanced fashion colour, seamless foiling, blow dry and finishing, longhair beginners/advanced, plus business courses on successful salon business methods.
