Melbourne-born salon group BIBA is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, having opened its first St Kilda salon, way back when in 1975. The team celebrated with a photo shoot slash VIP event last month, where guests watched them weave their editorial magic up close.
The photo shoot was a proverbial trip down BIBA’s memory lane, with six pairs of models wearing looks signifying the past four decades of hair, with a glimpse at the salon’s up coming trends as well. Guests witnessed the entire colouring, cutting and styling process, and in some cases, were even treated to a blow dry themselves. St Kilda salon owner Marcello Gueressi and his team led the creative direction for the day.
“We’ve seen fashion forward quiffs, undercuts, ubiquitous top-knots, blunt bob cuts and hair loaded with texture,” said BIBA Creative Director and multi-award winning stylist Frank Apostolopoulos. “We’re passionate about creating a salon space where customers can explore their uniqueness and rely on expert, fashion-forward advice. We enjoy collaborating with fashion designers, discovering new styles and techniques that fit with our vision and these are the things that keep BIBA such an exciting place to work and visit and so relevant and progressive today.”
The photo shoot is an interesting way to explore the four-decade history of both hair trends and the salon’s growth, both of which have evolved considerably since 1975. BIBA’s beginnings as a small, singular Box Hill salon started by one passionate hairdresser, Pavlos Divitaris have spawned 14 salons in and around Melbourne – and one in Taiwan – and a strong education system through the BIBA Academy.
Happy birthday BIBA, you don’t look a day over 39.
