Industry legend Paula Kent Meehan has passed away peacefully in her Californian home at the age of 82, on Monday June 23rd. Meehan impacted on the industry as a whole and the individual careers of millions through a Redken empire she built with her own two hands.
An industry icon: Paula Kent Meehan
Co-founding Redken Laboratories, Inc. in the 1960’s, Meehan used her personal funds and a passion for the beauty industry to change the game forever. Meehan established a hair care mentality that was scientifically based, teaching chemistry to stylists and creating products and techniques that considered the pH levels of the skin and hair, used protein technology and prioritised licensed cosmetology in their development.

A business mogul, Meehan’s huge list of achievements includes being named as one of the Top 50 Women Business Owners by Working Woman magazine, winning the number one Woman-Owned Business in LA for four consecutive years as decided by the Los Angeles Business Journal, and being titled one of Entrepreneurial Woman’s Eight Most Powerful Business Owners. The California Assembly District also named her Woman of the Year in 2003. She has been included in North American Hairstyling’s Hall of Leaders and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from Intercoiffure.
Meehan can be credited with starting the careers of such famous stylists as Vidal Sasoon, John Paul Dejoria and Jheri Redding. She founded the Global Salon Business Awards as well as the B.E.S.T. Foundation, a role through which she hosted several global events that celebrated stylistic creativity. A master of all trades, she was also Chairman of the Beverly Hills Courier and the Beverly Hills Fine Arts Theatre.

Her commitment to the beauty industry was dwarfed only by her passion for charity, through which she supported many industry, animal-related and other causes. She gave large donations to charities such as the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden. An avid animal lover, she was President of Pets 90210, a pet care and rescue foundation.
“Today, we lost a true legend in the professional hair care industry,” said Redken US General Manager, Leslie Marino. “The legacy that she has left sustains the brand today. Paula created products and education programs that propelled the industry’s transformation. Her pioneering ways will be missed but her spirit will be in our hearts and minds forever.”
