Shu Uemura is welcoming last minute entries into their Gallery of Style Competition (the next iteration of last year’s successful MUSE IMAGE Competition), with the deadline looming as Monday April 24. The theme for this year is TOKYORAMA, drawing from the neon city’s landscape and unique architecture, and finalists will be flown to Tokyo for mentorship and to recreate their editorial look. Simply put, the stakes are high!
Participants are tasked with creating one hair look, utilising the brand’s famous product ranges, that capture’s Tokyo’s essence. Think traditional elegance meets urban complexity, interpreted in sharp edges and smooth lines. Style, texture and shape must all be utilised to create a true piece of hair art.
Finalists will be flown to Tokyo from June 4 to 7, after which a judging panel of consumer and trade journalists, industry professionals and hairdressing leaders will decide the 2017 winner.
The main changes to 2016’s inaugural brand competition will be in amplification, giving the winner an even greater presence in both online and offline publications. The winner will be featured in Vogue and our very own INSTYLE, as well as winning a year’s supply of the brand’s products and gaining entry into the International Gallery of Style competition. Plus, the trip to Tokyo is a new addition to the prize pool for finalists.
Last year, Danny Puopolo of Rakis on Collins was awarded the main prize for his skillful interpretation of the Tokyo Vibe theme. His experiences as the competition’s winner, including a multi-page spread in INSTYLE magazine, proved pivotal to the development of his career.
“It’s so rewarding and exciting to put your work out there for the industry to see and for it to be received so positively by the community,” Danny said at the time.
“The whole experience has been terrific and winning this award means the world to me. It’s testament to all the time, energy and effort I’ve put into my work these past few years. These types of competitions keep me motivated and inspired to keep going.”
