The HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards (BHA), as sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, have officially lifted the flag, opening entries and challenging the world to put their skills to the test. With a still fairly new International Collection of the Year title, we’re calling on all Australian hairdressers to submit their work and make us proud! Entries close on Friday 18 June 2021.
The event is now in its 37th year, and looms as a landmark event of the global hairdressing world. For 2021, alternative criteria has been arranged to make the awards accessible and reflect the difficulties of the past year. Some of these changes include the use of more wigs and hair pieces and collections of six images for those that reach the finalist stage, other than the exceptions of the Trend Image award, which will remain as just one shot, and eight images required for the nominees for British Hairdresser of the Year.
“We’re always looking at ways to evolve the British Hairdressing Awards and so, at a time when we’ve all had to adapt to a new normal, we felt that the awards should reflect this. The record number and quality of entries in 2020 demonstrated just how important this event is to the hairdressing community, and we are all excited to see the work that is submitted,” said HJ’s executive director, Jayne Lewis Orr.
The British Hairdressing Awards offers 18 categories, including ten regional categories and seven specialist categories, as well as the British Hairdresser of the Year category for specifically nominated entrants. These specialist categories cover Afro Hairdresser of the Year, Artistic Team of the Year, Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year, Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year, Trend Image of the Year and British Hairdresser of the Year.
The regional categories span the UK at large, consisting of Eastern Hairdresser of the Year, London Hairdresser of the Year, Midlands Hairdresser of the Year, North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year, North Western Hairdresser of the Year, Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year, Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, Southern Hairdresser of the Year and Wales & South West Hairdresser of the Year and International Collection of the Year.
In 2019, Melbourne’s Jacky Chan won the inaugural International Collection of the Year award, showing the enormous potential for accolades and acclaim across the pond.
“Jacky’s recognition is significant as he’s not only made a name for himself in his own country, but this win will introduce him to many as an international hairdressing star,” Jayne said at the time. “His beautiful work captivated the imagination of more than 100 industry judges and he thoroughly deserves the trophy. Warmest congratulations for demonstrating fantastic technical dexterity, and for being such a great ambassador for Australian hairdressing.”
