The Future Creatives tour kicked off last month with two full-day workshops and demonstrations by two of the talented hair artists and ambassadors for the group, Melissa Bell and Hung Tran. Future Creatives is an education platform and collective that aims to launch the industry’s hottest emerging talent, writes Tam Allenby.
Melissa Bell was first up, running her workshop to an intimate group of 8 hairdressers at the Norris Bundall store on the Gold Coast. Attendees spent the morning learning balayage techniques and theoretical skills, and the afternoon getting hands-on with their own freehand balayage designs on mannequin heads, pushing themselves technically and creatively.
The day after the workshop, Melissa presented her Blonde Rebel collection in a ‘Look & Learn Techniques’ evening with two young models sporting edgy looks – braids and actual chains included. The evening was a great success, with drinks and nibbles also keeping the 20 guests happy.
A week later, Hung Tran flew in to the sunny Gold Coast (at the end of what was for him a huge season of hair competitions) to share his knowledge and expertise with another group of keen hairdressers from across southeast Queensland.
Hung spent the morning teaching his creative cutting techniques, showing how he uses trimmers like scissors to create artistic finishes. The afternoon was spent learning Hung’s three signature colouring techniques: triangles, pyramids, and curved sections. Again, the group put their newly learned skills to the test on mannequin heads.
Hung also presented a Look & Learn evening, presenting a before photo of his model Andrea before bringing her out on stage with a new do that perfectly displayed his triangle creative colour technique, showcasing vibrant colouring in turquoise and violet. He then demonstrated live his creative cutting techniques to create a graduated bob, elongated into extreme lengths.
The attendees from both events left impressed and inspired to get back to the salon and put some of their newly learned skills and techniques into practice. Head to the next event yourself for that same inspiration.
