It was a full house for the much anticipated Famous Five ‘get-together’ – where five of our industries most notable stars expressed their mastery and mindset with lots of humility and banter, writes Cameron Pine.
Not only was it the first time the Hair Expo has seen such a high-octane level of talent on one stage, it was also the first time editorial queen Renya Xydis has hit the Hair Expo schedule, headlining throughout the weekend and exposing her world of editorial and celebrity hair. Hair Expo veterans like Joey Scandizzo, Damien Rinaldo and Frank Apostolopoulos played out their creative wizardy alongside Dmitri Papas, our 2015 Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year and the result was truly inimitable.
Reinforcing why they are our home-grown favourites, Renya revealed her look which was taken from MBFWA’s Haryono Setiadi show – where creativity and colour layering imparted a distinct session and editorial feel before the ‘boys’ went on to provide an insight into the craft each of their hearts beats to.
Joey did what he does best and that was a short and bold haircut personalized and tapered to suit the models face shape with the short panels he’s known for. Damien’s look was a little darker while still empowering women and ‘people who have purpose’ with length and supreme texture.
Damien is all about a bespoke tailored approach – one that is evident in his award-winning salon, Boris the Cuttery. Everything Damien does promotes craftsmanship and the idea of ‘hand-made’ – a key thematic emotion showed and demonstrated by each of the five. “I like to support our craft by supporting and buying anything hand-made where possible. When it comes to fashion I try to buy things that come with a personalized approach because that’s what us as hairdressers represent,” said Damien.
And Frank, well he’s one of our industry’s coolest and definitely a quiet achiever that knows how to make an impression where it counts. “I wanted to do something quick, fun, crazy and mental,” Frank said. Frank and Joey played a lot more with the ‘boy meets girl’ aesthetic while Joey kept everyone together by entertaining the crowd at the same time as producing the quickest and cleanest haircut we’d seen for a while.
“I pull inspiration from everywhere – my team, the streets, art and really just feel so inspired by fashion and my life around me,” Renya said.
Through contrast and contradiction, the creative zeitgeist played a lead role in this one-off hairdressing presentation that was as dynamic as it was seamless. Dmitri seemed to play the role of the lone ranger who cracked a few jokes every now and then but did not disappoint guests with his distinctive and directional haircut.
The Famous Five – a very unique insight into the eclectic minds of some of our industry’s leaders.
