If you were an active member of social media last year, chances are you dumped an ice cold bucket of water on your head. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge had its detractors, who complained about the rise of arm chair activism or ‘slacktivism’, but it ended up raising $100 million for the cause and undeniably spread the word about a terrible disease.
Well, the latest social media challenge is specifically aimed at hairdressers, started by one of the most iconic hairdressers of them all. Trevor Sorbie has started the 30 Second Hair Twist Challenge Campaign in support of his charity My New Hair. The organisation started seven years ago, acting as a British national network that supports independent salons that provide wig styling services to those suffering from cancer and medical hair loss.
In the touching video explaining the campaign, Trevor talks of his personal ties to the cause, particularly in styling the wig for his Sister-In-Law who seven years ago lost her hair through cancer. The joy she experienced from Trevor being able to transform her look, and the general detrimental effects to one’s confidence and emotional well-being when they lose their hair, outline why this is such an important cause. Hear it from Trevor in his own words below.
The process is simple – if nominated (or even if you aren’t) record a video of yourself creating a hair twist on another person in 30 seconds, then nominate your hairdressing friends who will have 24 hours to do the same. The last important step is to donate, and L’Oréal Professionnel will also be donating 1 pound for every donation.
Trevor’s aim was to take this initiative global and since launching recently it has already made its way around the world, now starting to land in Australia where national figures such as Caterina DiBiase, Brad Ngata and Jayne Wild have taken the challenge.
You can contribute to this great cause, unite the international hairdressing community and won’t even have to tip ice over your head – are you up for the challenge?
