Hemisphere Hair in Perth is celebrating their 20th birthday, building their success on top-tier style and incomparable client service, which makes the salon a haven for clients. After moving premises last year, the salon dynasty continues to thrive.
“A salon has to be about so much more than hair,” said Hemisphere Hair founder Nick Mammoliti, who runs the salon with business partner Damien Kabay. “Our clients regularly comment on how comfortable they feel when they enter the salon. Hairdressing today has to be about the total experience, making clients feel great as soon as they walk in and then backing that up with innovation and creativity.”
The salon’s accolades run the gamut. They have been named WA State Finalists for three consecutive years in the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour trophy competition, and will compete at national finals in September. This speaks to the creativity and artistry prevalent in their salon culture.
“Colour Trophy allows the team to be unrestrained and let their creativity flow. All the Hemisphere Hair staff are involved in the project, which makes it great for team building,” Nick said. “Once the looks are created and photographed, we then showcase them to clients to demonstrate what our salon is all about. It also puts our clients on the cutting-edge of industry trends and demonstrates that not only are we at the forefront, but we have the skills to attest to that.”
The new salon is just three doors down from their old premises and offers a refreshed aesthetic, more space and a look that indicates their client-first salon approach. With a New York style warehouse aesthetic created from the chunky steel beams already built into the space, the aesthetic offers a monochromatic colour palette, timber accents and Jarrah floorboards that are a signature of the retail spaces and homes of the inner-city area of Mount Lawley.
“When designing the interior, we had to be very aware that we were not designing for ourselves, but for the customers. We wanted a look that catered for everyone. It had to be stylish and timeless, yet didn’t alienate,” Nick said.
The space also includes a Kérastase ritual zone and L’Oréal Professionnel colour bar, adding another luxury element to the salon and cementing even further a two decade partnership with the L’Oréal Professional Products group, facilitated with true trust and loyalty.
“Aligning exclusively with the same partner means L’Oréal instinctively understands our needs and are supportive in all aspects of the business, from training to providing tools for the actual running of a business,” Nick said “It’s critical for any salon to remember business is about more than hair. It has to also be about keeping up with technology and ensuring on-going training of staff. The moment we stop training staff is the moment we stop performing as a salon.”
The industry stalwart has a long and storied history. Nick began the salon with his wife Jenny and built the business to ten employees, before hiring Damien fifteen years ago.
“Damien had just returned from a few years in London and came into Hemisphere pursuing work. I knew of Damien through reputation and as an award-winning apprentice, so even though we weren’t looking for anyone at the time, I immediately hired him.”
Damien leads the way on the salon’s Colour Trophy entries and aids the salon in giving back to the community through contributions to Share The dignity and World’s Greatest Shave.
A salon with a supreme focus on clients, design, artistry, continual growth and philanthropy – here’s to the next 20 years!
