Hong Kong Elite

As Hong Kong is to Sydney, so is Cosmoprof Asia to Hair Expo: bigger, louder, more crowded and even more overwhelming. From 13th to 15th November 2013, the expo (which displays a huge number of beauty, spa and nail products and equipment as well as hair products and furnishings) brought together hair and beauty professionals from most of the world, but primarily provides a key trading environment for Asia Pacific salon owners and hairdressers as well as product manufacturers and distributors.

The massive three-day event this year had over 60,000 visitors though the turnstiles and although Chinese buyers were abundant and the sound of Mandarin seemed to dominate on the trade floor, markets like Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Southeast Asia were all well represented.

Whether as a chance to network or to learn, Cosmoprof Asia Focus on Hair provides a collaborative creative backdrop to the serious business of the trade show.

Intercoiffure Mondial president and hairstyling superstar Klaus Peter Ochs chose high drama and noir lighting for his ‘Vision of the Elite’ showcase that gave an insight into extreme creativity and the Intercoiffure network. Futuristic shape control along with edgy shaves and feathered half-mohawks resulted in a blend of The Matrix and Mad Max. Also welcoming the audience to the revolution were Joakim Roos, Art Director of ICD and Yasunori Shichijoh from Japan. Intercoiffure is considered one of the world’s top hairdressing association’s, with branches in more than 60 countries. Intercoiffure’s global partners L’Oréal Professionnel and P&G Salon Professional supported the show.

The following day referenced global beauty trends with Shiseido Professional’s “Beauty Odyssey”—a swirling variety of textures and colours on 50 models. Led by two-time Japan Hairdresser of the Year Tadashi Harada, styling teams came from Shiseido’s Japan headquarters, Beijing Hair Culture and Hair Corner from Hong Kong. Onstage creatives included actor-producer Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui, film director Jacky Lee Chi Lun, image stylist Kevin Ma Tin Yao and DJ Frankie Lam, giving the stage a filmic feel and sound. Altogether, an audience of over 2,000 hairdressers and salon owners viewed the two shows.

The hair zone itself grouped more than 200 salon product, equipment and furnishings exhibitors with a specific hair focus, many of which were Asian distributors of international brands as well as local manufacturers seeking new distributors. This complicated mix of distributors and regions makes it difficult for a salon owner to establish whether a product is available in Australasia and if so who the appropriate contact may be to import or purchase it, but in terms of getting a world perspective on the industry (not just its artistry, but the nuts and bolts of product manufacturing and distribution) the Cosmoprof Asia trade show provides a revealing if at times prodigious snapshot.

Away from hair, other highlights included Cosmoprof Asia’s new-this-year Nail & Accessories zone and International Nail Days program with some heady displays of out-there nail art that rendered the need for chopsticks obsolete.

A diverse array of body and face art tools trended on the trade show floors across the beauty supplies and cosmetics sections. For example, lash extensions made with silk and even human hair vied for attention among big name product and equipment suppliers. Of course makeup came in a huge variety of brands and private label offerings, in the broadest of colour spectrums perhaps ever seen in the area (yes, fluoro is definitely still in this season). Probably at least half of the brands on display would have never been seen in Australia.
