NYFW: Paul Mitchell Throws Back with a Pulled Back Look

Paul Mitchell burst on to the New York Fashion Week stage this year for the Yigal Azrouel SS 16 runway show. Lead Hairstylist, James Pecis offered up bold hairstyles inspired by the ‘modern renaissance’, all of which were a true testament to how Paul Mitchell’s products can create sleek, layered back ponytails with a touch of movement, writes Natacha Maloon.

The final product was a textured, sophisticated hairstyle that introduced a hint of romanticism into the mix.

James selected The Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger collection as the hero products for his technical construction of the ‘partless ponytail’ hair.

James tweaked the look, by slotting in playing cards and waxing paper in order to keep the models’ hair intact before they braved the runway. This signature technique by James is precisely why he’s so at home backstage at NYFW – and a key reason the looks remained chic throughout the show and beyond.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Paul Mitchell styled for Paul Frank’s children’s runway debut, in what we’re calling the clash of the Pauls. Glitter, colour and cotton candy textures and hues, as well as more traditional top knots and structured styles for young boys and girls complemented the playful Circus Jumble collection, and proved Paul Mitchell’s styling spectrum is wide.

Get the look for Yigal Azrouel:

Step One: First, hair should be brushed straight back utilizing a three-piece layering technique to avoid parting down the middle.
Step Two: Beginning with the back of the head, spray body building mousse (Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydro Cream Whip) onto first layer of hair and go section by section until complete.
Step Three: Next, go back through hair sections one by one with hairspray (Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Finishing Spray) and brush through using the cold setting on the blow dryer (Paul Mitchell Neuro Dry) to dry and set sections, making sure each section is dry as you work your way up from the under layers to the top.
Step Four: Once hair is prepped, create the low ponytail by dividing hair into three sections, starting with the top and then from the sides pull back hair so it rests on the nape of the neck and apply elastic to secure.
Step Five: To achieve the final, glossy look, apply a shine spray (Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Shine Spray) through the ends of the ponytail and then go over it with a smoothing iron (Paul Mitchell Neuro Style).
