Our 5 Favourite Celebrity Merman Hair Moments

Last year a new colour wave took over men’s hair trends – we’re referring, of course, to Merman hair.

While colourful hair has long been a feature on consumer and celebrity heads for women (this list of 2015 rainbow trends should definitively prove that), the Merman hair trend turned this over to the men, allowing males to colour their hair – and facial hair – a bright colour of their choosing.

This week Justin Bieber became the latest Merman to join the tribe, sporting a lilac look on Instagram that quickly went viral. With 2 million likes on each image and counting, Justin may ensure that colourful hair for men starts to become a salon feature.

With this in mind we’ve selected our five favourite Merman moments.

1. David Bowie

The original Merman – as always, David Bowie was way before his time. As one of the pioneers of glam rock, makeup and bright hair were commonplace for Bowie, particularly in the 70s when this vibrant red hair look was a staple, and an inspiring choice for men and women wanting to become more adventurous with their look.

2. Jared Leto

Jared Leto is a consistent hair muse – becoming an icon of the man bun, formerly rocking long hair, showing off platinum blonde almost better than Kim and then taking to the streets in this bright green style. Yes, this is more the Joker’s look than Jared’s himself, as the green is a product of Jared’s role in Suicide Squad, but we personally think he should keep it when filming wraps.

3. Joe Jonas

When Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas split up last year, she went short (albeit, falsely so), and Joe went bright, debuting a blue colour look that he then made distinctly more turquoise. More boy band stars should do this…

4. Zayn Malik

…And they have. Former One Direction star Zayn Malik opted for silver locks, and while it’s not technically a bright Merman colour, it is a debonair George Clooney-esque look that should inspire your male clients to be a little bolder with their colour choices.

5. Justin Bieber

Finally, the catalyst for this article, Justin Bieber makes the list. His purple mane is the latest in a long list of quirky hair colour choices for the singer (his previous dalliances with platinum are a favourite) and his mega-star status may mean you see more men embracing their metrosexuality and asking for a bright colour from now on.
