Pearlin McCarthy of Pearlin Hair & Makeup Artistry took home the all-new bridal category title at the Hair Festival in 2024, winning a trophy, $300 from sponsor O&M and the accolades in this prestigious live Competition. As a first-time entrant, she speaks to the experience as “rewarding”.
“Live competitions really push me to grow as a stylist,” Pearlin shared. “I love the challenge of thinking on my feet and striving to refine my technique under pressure and scrutiny. Equally, I value the opportunity to connect with other talented stylists, there’s such a supportive community vibe, and I always leave inspired.”

“It’s such a great way to challenge yourself creatively and step outside your comfort zone. The energy backstage is electric, and you get to meet so many amazing people. I’d encourage anyone—whether you’re new or experienced—to give it a go. You grow so much from the experience,” she added.
Pearlin created a voluminous bridal look with some bling to wow the judges.
“For this look, I wanted to celebrate my signature style- glamorous, sculpted waves with a dramatic twist,” she said. “I aimed to create volume and impact, something that felt both timeless and bold. The headpiece was custom-designed by Anita from Kezani Jewellery, a local Perth jeweller. I had a vision of a bougie, oversized bow that would complement the softness of the waves, and she brought it to life so beautifully. This look felt true to me and my style, so to be recognised for it meant a great deal.”
Pearlin’s bridal advice includes the importance of communication, asking bridal clients when visions are unclear and, significantly, practice is key.
“Practice is everything,” Pearlin said. “I believe in continuous practice, constantly refining techniques, exploring new styles, and dedicating time to upskilling so I can bring fresh ideas and confidence to every bridal appointment.”

In the Hair Festival Competitions, nine categories across men’s hair, women’s styling, colour, new skills and more are available, as well as three overall Hair Festival Champions named in men’s, women’s and emerging talent. The Competitions take place on Monday, June 30, at The ICC, Sydney, across two stages in the Festival Hub.
“I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such a passionate and creative industry,” Pearlin said. “There’s always something new to learn, and I feel lucky to keep evolving with every client and every opportunity. As someone who primarily works in bridal, competitions like this allow me to express a more editorial version of my work, it’s a refreshing creative outlet. Being recognised for a look that truly reflects my style was deeply affirming, and I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries in future.”
