Rose Thorogood is an expert in glam. The bridal and editorial hairdresser, who operates as The Hair Posey in Melbourne, won the Hair Festival Glam Slam Women’s Total Look category in both the 2023 and 2024 Hair Festival Competitions, in an experience she lauds as transformative.
“I first entered to push myself out of my comfort zone and to see what I can achieve when feeling pressured,” Rose said. “I found that I enjoy the planning process a lot and needed to make sure to practice things so that it feels natural doing the style, which quickens the process on stage, which is good when you are on a time limit.”

“Taking part in the competitions is a great way to challenge yourself and see what you can produce within a time limit. It is also a great way to try to overcome anxiety about having all eyes focused on you as you are in front of a crowd but without being the total focus of everyone,” she added.
Entering both editorial and bridal categories, Rose walked away with a trophy and the $300 cash prize for her Glam Slam look, which was a faux bob in a 1920s flapper style.
“I knew I wanted to do a style that was a nod to the past and found myself inspired to do a faux bob, which worked perfectly with the 1920s so I gathered the clothing and accessories that fit this look,” Rose shared. “I have always liked to do things slightly out of the ordinary, so this helps with my creativity. I also find nature and architecture helps me with my creative ideas.
Nine categories across men’s hair, women’s styling, colour, new skills and more are available in the Hair Festival Competitions, as well as three overall Hair Festival Champions named in men’s, women’s and emerging talent. The Competitions take place on Monday, June 30, at The ICC, Sydney, across two stages in the Festival Hub.
“Doing the competitions has been a great experience in not only overcoming my own fears and issues but also the possibility of being part of a team as you need to coordinate a total look,” Rose shared. “This required me to become team leader and organiser for everything from the hair design, clothing choices, makeup styles and more.”
