Star Spot winners were granted an industry experience of a lifetime at the Brisbane Ekka Fashion Parade earlier this month, writes Natacha Maloon.
The Royal National Show boosted the profiles of the regional Star Spot winners, who were bestowed the ultimate privilege of working alongside multi-award winner, former F.A.M.E. team coach and hair icon, Carole Haddad.
This enviable prize was an undeniable launching pad for three emerging talents, Kelly Reeves of DNA Hairdressing, Ashburton, New Zealand, Chloe Schaufler of LC Hair, Raymond Terrace (NSW) and Jacky Quon of Smitten Hairdressing (ACT) . The winners were permitted a backstage pass in order to provide support to Corcorz Hair for Ekka’s famous Natural Fibre Parade.
The catwalk shows embraced a circus theme brief, which meant the models donned giant wigs of exaggerated ‘clown’ texture. The hairstylists were assigned the difficult task of working with these wigs, but they did so with ease, and rose to the occasion in spectacular style.
“Our Star Spot Hairdressers learnt three different ways to prepare the models’ hair ready for the wigs to be fitted, as well as learning to manage and care for the voluminous wigs” Carole said. “They worked so hard and I made sure they would go back to their own salons with new practical skills and knowledge.”
Star Spot winner, Jacky Quon, reflected on the best advice that she learnt from the project, the lesson that you have to back yourself.
“Carole channels all her energy, passion and soul into her amazing art; and it became infectious,” Jacky explained. “The experience was a perfect mixture of hard work, education and fun. Mornings were filled backstage with models, circus performers and wigs while afternoons were spent learning new techniques in the salon.”
However, the weekend wasn’t all work, and no play for these eager hairstylists.
The winners were privy to consultation seminars with the industry’s best, allowing them to soak up new techniques that they can take away and directly apply in their respective salons.
“Star Spot Opportunities were invented for talented hairdressers who would not normally have an experience like this on their own doorsteps” Hair Shots 2 The World Owner, Leanne Cutler explained of the regional-based competition.
The project provided great incentives for talented hairstylists in the country to grow their skill base, and pick the brains of industry professionals.
