Here’s a riddle as old as time – how do you get a large group of hairdressing students into a room to offer them advice, new courses and free food? Sydney TAFE found the answer by asking their students to fill out 25 words or less describing why they would want to win a covetable education prize. The catch? They had to be there on the night to claim it.
With over 25 per cent of the college’s total intake of students submitting an entry, the event was suitably packed. You can see why students would care enough to stop by – first prize was a two day cutting mentorship program with Kylie Dwyer from Elite Hair Education, a scissor set from Excellent Edges values at $3500, the opportunity to be involved in a photo shoot with Steve Corthine and a two year subscription to INSTYLE. Second place won an American Crew cutting course valued at $1120 and a two INSTYLE subscription and third prize was given a special product prize pack and a two year INSTYLE subscription as well.
First place was given to Claire Montegue, second place to Lisa Rowlinson and third to Renee Sayed-Ouffoue. Each student who attended the night also received a $100 gift voucher to an Elite Education boot camp course in February, a 10 per cent discount card for Excellent Edges scissors and a one year subscription to INSTYLE.
The event provided more prizes to all attendees in the form of networking opportunities and worldly advice. Sue Flynn, the college’s Head Teacher of Hairdressing, discussed the importance of constantly learning to better your hairdressing career in her address to students, while judges Kylie and Stevie both shared what they believe it takes to work successfully in hairdressing today.
Kylie shared the significance of a good attitude, strong work ethic, confidence and the ability to have fun in your career, while repeating how important it is to never stop educating yourself. For his part, Stevie discussed the necessity of constantly competing, sharing his personal anecdote of entering the Hair Expo awards for many years before finally winning this year.
After so much discussion around education, the evening concluded with the announcement of a new and affordable (just $210) Certificate 4 course, comprised of six evening seminars in cutting, colour and styling run by high-profile industry figures. Available to just 25 hairdressers, those enrolled will also receive a ticket to Ssshhh next month, making this course the bargain of the year. We suggest you get in quick!
Despite only three students leaving with the big prizes, with so many opportunities in the pipe line at Sydney TAFE, it kind of feels like everyone’s a winner.
