The 2016 Oscars have been and gone, and while everyone else was talking about ‘Leo’s year’ or one of the tightest Best Picture races in recent memory, our eyes were turned squarely to the stars’ red carpet hair.
While the Grammys can be a little kooky and the Met Gala veers towards Avant Garde, there’s only one word to describe the Oscars – glamour, glamour, glamour. This year, braids, knots, buns, classic waves and embellishments proved this theory correct. Here’s a snapshot of our 7 favourite looks.
1. Rooney Mara
This intricate triad of top knots made the Best Supporting Actress nominee stand out on the red carpet. Critics swiftly put her on the best dressed list, lauding her ability to break the Oscar red carpet’s unspoken glam hair rule with the sculptural up style, and drawing comparisons to the similar three-bun hairstyle worn by Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is ironic because…
2. Daisy Ridley
Rey’s alter ego/actress Daisy Ridley also sported a notable hair style at the Oscars, with her complex knotted style providing a unique touch to the red carpet. Daisy follows a proud tradition of Star Wars actresses with original, iconic hair looks (Carrie Fisher’s Leia and her dual circular buns are still a major pop cultural icon) and it seems she did her hair heritage proud this week.
3. Brie Larson
Brie Larson picked up something equally as important as her Academy Award for Best Actress in the incredibly powerful Room at the Oscars, and that is our tick of approval for this adorned hair look, thanks to hairstylist Mara Roszak and ghd. A simple twist, jewels and a soft finish meant she handled the ‘glamour’ direction of the evening with aplomb.
4. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has officially become a hair chameleon – after singing the American anthem at the Superbowl with long blonde hair just a couple of weeks ago, she showed up to the Grammys in the perfect red mullet to pay tribue to David Bowie. Her Oscars style, created by Frederic Aspiras for ghd, was Marilyn-esque vintage blonde waves, another win for the star.
5. Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde’s very pretty braided bun is what every bridal client you have will ask for for the next year. Best to take note.
6. Dorith Mous
Model/photographer/film maker/slashie Dorith Mous proved that, yes, Academy Awards-levels of elegance are totally possible with short hair. Pass the message on to your clients.
7. Andra Day
Soul singer Andra Day seemed to have worn out her stylist’s hairspray supply, with some retro waves that look pretty well locked in. We give points for the slick curls and the fact that this look will probably last through the after party and beyond.
