The 8 Major Hair Trends of The First Half Of 2015

Now that we’re through the first six months of 2015 (when did that happen?) it’s time to take stock of the main hair trends that have defined the first half of the year.

Do you have your finger on the pulse of these 8 major trends?

1. The shag

The 70s have reigned in 2015, with the shag making its long-awaited comeback. Wavy layers headlined by a middle-parted, heavy fringe, presented the messy rockstar look we’ve all always wanted to attain. Alexa Chung and even Taylor Swift have made this look a modern favourite.

2. Tortoiseshell hair

Touted as ‘ombré’s moodier sister’ by London stylist and creator of the look Jack Howard, Tortoiseshell hair involves the freehand application of hues such as gold, chocolate, chestnut and honey. It’s been a hit this year, featuring on the A-list heads of Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Alba and Khloe Kardashian.

3. Platinum

It was a blink and you’ll miss it transformation (save for it being front page news worldwide) when Kim Kardashian traded in her dark looks for platinum, but it was still enough to convince the world to follow suit. Clients opted to go much blonder with a nary a care for the condition of their hair, and the follow up appointments are, no doubt, still on-going.

4. The lob

Every day it seems like a new celebrity is chopping off their locks lob-style. The endless list of 2015 inductees includes Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Kate Hudson, Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding. While this trend has been big for a couple of years now, the communal stubbornness of Hollywood means we’re not likely to see it fall away any time soon. Just as well, people have only just stopped asking us what ‘lob’ even means.

5. Sand art hair

Borne from Instagram, this hair trend is one of the newest takes on rainbow hair, with the multi-coloured locks featuring a degree of ombré that sees them blend more seamlessly together. Rebecca Taylor created the trend in a video for Pravana, taking her inspiration from sand art (we assume you guessed as much from the name). You can learn how to create it here.

6. The man bun

You didn’t think we’d leave the guys out of this did you? With men’s hair styling bigger than ever, it’s fitting that one of the most iconic hair looks of the first half of this year is the man bun – the pinnacle of metrosexuality. Who can resist a guy with a better top knot than you?

7. Split dye

Not for the faint of heart, the split dye trend came to fruition this May, pairing bright hues, muted tones and all their combinations in an entirely separate 50 50 split. This bold Instagram trend was inspired by none other than Cruella de Vil – a style icon is there ever was one.

8. Granny hair

It was a trend that ruled the runways and red carpets of 2011, thanks to Jean Paul Gaultier and Nicole Richie, respectively, but Kylie Jenner’s handle on Gen Y helped it make a 2015 comeback. The #grannyhair craze would explain why your younger clients are opting for grey.
