No awards ceremony is complete without an avalanche of news and opinion about the hair looks worn by celebrities on the red carpet. Some styles are beloved, some looks are hated and other are mercilessly poked fun at through Internet memes. The important thing is they get people talking.
There was an abundance of these show-stopping hair moments at the 2016 Golden Globes – here are 9 of our favourite.
1. Katy Perry
A strong combination of wig, hair accessory and Schwarzkopf Professional products made Katy Perry’s Golden Globes look a head-turner. The songstress traded in her usual pixie cut for this long style, complete with the retro Bumpit hair accessory of yesteryear, placed into the hair to give it extra height. Never have so many people had to Google ‘Bumpit’ before this.
2. Jennifer Lawrence
A fair few headlines were claiming J.Law won Best Hair of the Evening (in addition to her award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, but we all know which award is more important here). The winning look was sleek from the front, and subtly detailed from the sides. Observe:
She really can do no wrong.
3. Channing Tatum
Poor Channing Tatum provoked the Internet’s ire with this overly-gelled look, with Twitter users comparing him unfavourably to pretty much every emo character in the pop culture lexicon. One cruel tweeter suggested he had been styled by Justin Bieber, while another suggested his hair should have won Best Comedy (hey, if The Martian can win it, anything should be eligible). For better or worse, he stole the show.
4. Cate Blanchett
If anyone can pull off asymmetry with the same level of elegance as Cate Blanchett, I’d like to see it. Robert Vetica styled a look he described as “undone glamour, that remained modern and trendy”, for mega-styling brand ghd.
5. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga went old-school with a classic black dress and these platinum blonde waves, truly transporting us back to Old Hollywood. Maybe that’s what Leonardo Di Caprio was so taken aback by when she passed him on the way to accepting her award. Again, observe:
6. Jenji Kohan
The creator of Orange Is The New Black’s famously colourful locks were out in full force on the red carpet. We could make a joke about magenta and violet being the new black… but we won’t.
7. Alicia Vikander
This intricate look for Alicia Vikander is more complex than it looks, with an array of braids and sections making it seem different from every angle.
8. Lilliana Vazquez
With the title of ‘Author, TV Personality and Style Expert’ Lilliana pretty much has to nail her read carpet look, lest she lose the third part of her job description. Luckily this interesting knotted style was the hair equivalent of a slam dunk.
9. Maria Menounos
It may not have generated memes and as much conversation as some of the other styles on this list, but Maria Menoumos’ simple braided look was a lesson in how to do Golden Globes hair right.
Until next year.
