It’s officially both summer and festival season in the northern hemisphere, which means, through the power of Instagram, we’ll be taking their sunny trends to brighten up our own more dreary winters here in Australia. The latest bold colour trend to come out of that mentality is the Dip Dye look, a new hit on social media and the red carpet.
The look takes bold or pastel colour and applies it just to the ends of the hair, to various extremes. Alternative styles include using the Dip Dye technique just for the fringe, a take that has been explored on Instagram. While the technique itself is hardly revolutionary, it’s new-found popularity with major celebrities and the social media crowd make it pertinent to your salon.
The trend has been a big part of Taylor Swift’s new aesthetic, with pink pastel hair at the ends of her hair accompanying her looks at awards shows, live performances and in the single artwork for her recent song Me! Other celebrities who are showing off the trend in different ways include Cardi B, who tried out green Dip Dye at a Fashion Nova collaboration launch party, while Gemma Chan played with the technique for a wearable take on pink hair at a Met Gala after party. Bella Thorne tried a reverse and more natural variation, with her bright auburn hue descending into blonde ends at the Critics Choice Awards. On Instagram, the look is a hit with international salons and even major brands such as Wella Professionals in all its colour variations.
“Unlike ombré ,which is created with multiple tones to achieve the perfect blend, Dip Dye looks like you dipped the ends of your hair in a bucket of paint,” Linda de Zeeuw, master stylist at Rob Peetoom New York, told InStyle in America, while the trend has also been featured on Style Caster. “This gives a strong line between the base colour and the pastel colour.”
The look offers colour longevity, low maintenance for your clients and a diverse landscape to try bolder hues in more subtle ways and to various extremes across the colour spectrum. Offer this look to your clients looking for a fun new trend, and let’s all just pretend it’s summer Down Under.
