The power of the hairdressing community has once again been brought to fruition, with TONI&GUY salons creating a national drive to help the remote Aboriginal Community of Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory. The drive is the brainchild of TONI&GUY Bondi Beach Salon Owner Kelly Wright and Enterprise Coordinator of Enterprise Learning Projects Tanya Edgerton, the overwhelming response of which has turned it into a flourishing endeavour, nation-wide.

The idea was born from Enterprise Learning Projects’ trip to Jilkminggan in February. There, the women of the community shared their ideas for business and expressed their desire to develop their existing skills in sewing and print making, as well as to provide work opportunities and economic growth for the entire community. The organisation then partnered with TONI&GUY, accepting donations to be given to the community, from second hand clothes to kids items, sewing materials and more. These items will be used to create a ‘pop up Op Shop’ in the community, aiding the community’s business efforts and harnessing all the funds to facilitate the women’s trade education in a newly established art centre.

The drive was an instant success – with the project’s initial social media announcement amassing roughly 25, 000 shared in just 48 hours. Many TONI&GUY salons have become donation drop-off points, and the team has thrown themselves into cold calling and other methods to receive goods. Kennards Self Storage and McCarroll’s Renault Artarmon came on board to provide storage space and transportation of the donated goods, respectively. The drive has grown to the point where the team has now received calls from people offering training for the women as well.

The good news is you still have a few days to donate your second hand items, with donations being accepted until the end of March. If you are a business that would like to donate your services or funds, you can contact Kelly on (02) 9365 2655.

It couldn’t be clearer – when the hairdressing community rallies around a cause, they make a substantial difference. Well done to the TONI&GUY team for working together in helping this worthy community.
