Hair Expo’s Salon Team of the Year award is a coveted honour – going to the salon team that demonstrates unity, communication and a shared and inspirational creative vision from all team members, truly validating the salon as a whole. Once again, the winners for the 2017 iteration were the renowned é SALON team, and their entire Writhe collection is available for you to peruse below.

The collection is inspired by the abstract artwork of Russell Mills, blurring the body and utilising sheer fashion styling to pull all focus to the face and hair. Techniques such as twisting, looping, knotting and exaggerated movement in the hair fulfilled the collection’s titular ‘writhe’ concept, and distortion of shape in the face and body ensured the hair was the hero facet of the artistic images. The makeup complements these elements with a dark, smokey aesthetic, highlighting eyes or lips for each individual model, according to what suited their personal features the most.

“Mills paints predominantly black and red portraits with the faces in focus yet the bodies are blurred with brushstrokes of red smudged throughout the works,” the team explained. “What appealed to us most about these paintings was the exaggerated shapes of the hair; we were inspired to create these shapes however add an editorial aspect, something quite embellished yet relatable to our salon work.”
