40 of the local industry’s most talented hairdressers have battled it out for the coveted gold, in Wella Professionals’ 2017 Australian and New Zealand Trend Vision competition.
Held at TePapa in Wellington, New Zealand, and hosted by the inimitable Benni and Kristian Tognini, 40 finalists in categories of Color Vision and Creative Vision came together to fight for ultimate creative supremacy. The winners won the opportunity to compete for the international title in London in October – so let’s see how they got there, and who ended up with the air tickets (and the bragging rights).
After a stringent photographic entry process where entrants created looks based on the ‘New Norm by Past Forward’ and ‘Ultra Contouring Trends’, the finalists created their looks live for a catwalk show at the event.
The illustrious judging panel included Belinda Jeffrey (La Boutique), Bronwyn Illingworth (TONI&GUY New Zealand), Danny Pato (D&M Hair Design), Dennis Langford (TONI&GUY), Jayne Wild (Wild Life Hair), Lee Cohen (Reds Salon), Marie Uva (UVA Salon), Michael Beel (Buoy Hairdressing), Stephen Marr (Stephen Marr) and Uros Mikic (Kinky Curly Straight).
Most importantly, let’s name the winners, who earned their spot on a plane to the international competition in London, as well as a once in a lifetime mentoring experience with two-time International Trend Vision winner, Lyndal Salmon of Biba Academy, in anticipation for the trip.
The Creative Vision Gold Award was given to Beau Jenkins of UVA Salon (Australia) and Kylie Hayes of Moha Hairdressing (New Zealand). The Color Vision Gold Award was won by Jack Horton of Jack Horton Hair Boutique (Australia) and Mana Dave of Blaze (New Zealand). Congratulations to these winners, and all the medallists and other category winners, listed below.
“This is a truly life changing opportunity for Australian and New Zealand hairdressers,” said Wella Professional Education Director Australia & New Zealand, Gina Thomas. “Wella TrendVision is their platform to get their work recognised on a national and international level. It also gives them the opportunity to work with an incredible talent and mentor, Lyndal Salmon, to prepare for the International Award in London. On behalf of Wella, I would like to congratulate the winners on being awarded Gold, we look forward to seeing you compete in London at International TrendVision. I would also like to thank everyone who entered this year; the standard of work was truly exceptional and we encourage you to enter the 2018 competition.”
Attendees at the event were also privy to three industry guests who took part in the ultimate styling battle, with Wella Professionals Creative Director ANZ, Frank Apostolopoulos, Sebastian Professional Creative Director ANZ, Brad Lepper and Nioxin Ambassador ANZ, Elizabeth Tedesco taking to the stage to show off their extraordinary skill.
International colourist and legendary Canadian Guest Artist Dana Lysend from Supernova Salon also attended to demonstrate her work across TV, film and editorial. The talented quartet then led a masterclass with a selection of hairdressers the day following the awards ceremony.
“Wella is committed to providing the industry with a world class competition that is dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary talent of our hairdressers in Australia and New Zealand,” shared Jerome Toulza, General Manager, Coty Professional Beauty ANZ. “Wella TrendVision is a chance to not only compete for the opportunity to share your work on an international stage, but to come together for a night of creative inspiration and celebration. I would like to thank our amazing judges; There is no great hairdressing competition without great, industry acclaimed, independent judges. Congratulations to our New Zealand and Australian winners, and good luck for the international final in London!”
